For those who use their sewing machine mainly for quilting, or who are more concerned with high quality than extra features, the Juki TL-2000Qi sewing and quilting machine might be a great fit for you.
In fact, it might just be the best sewing machine for quilting right now.
It exists somewhere on the line between an industrial and a home sewing machine, so it’s very sturdy and excellent at what it does. It would be great for sewers who plan on using it for a few specific projects or as a companion for another machine.
Of course, with such quality comes a high price tag. We’ll get into whether the Juki TL-2000Qi is worth the money, and any issues you should consider before purchasing.
Let’s get into it…
Juki Tl-2000Qi Sewing and Quilting Machine: The Details
With sturdy metal parts and entirely manual controls on the Juki TL-2000Qi’s left side, there are no delicate, computerized mechanisms to potentially go haywire.
It features a sleek, white design with a wide throat space, making it look right at home in a modern space, despite its industrial qualities.
It is rather bulky, but not quite a behemoth. You could easily transport it from room to room — and it does sport a carrying handle for that — but it’s definitely not a machine you’ll want to travel with.
- Weight: 37.8 lbs
- Dimensions: 17.8 x 8.6 x 13.8 inches
- Stitches: Straight stitch (forward and reverse)
- Speed: Up to 1500 stitches per minute
- Computerized/Mechanic: Mechanic
- Bobbin: Side load-in on left side
- Warranty: 2 years for mechanized parts, 5 years for all other parts
This machine comes with a 13 inch extension table that can be attached and detached. The Juki TL-2000Qi is a match made in heaven with large, bulky sewing projects, so we were glad to see the table included. The extra workspace means you can spread those larger projects out, making them less unruly and easier to see the full extent of.
You get a few standard bobbins to get you started, which will be appreciated by those who want to start sewing straight out of the box. The exact brand of bobbins they use can be a bit difficult to find, once they need to be replaced, but luckily, standard bobbins should fit just fine.
You’ll have your choice between a few different presser feet. The machine comes with:
- A darning/free motion foot
- A straight stitch foot
- A quilting foot
- A walking foot
One of the Juki TL-2000Qi‘s strengths is its ability to handle fabrics of different weights and thickness, so it’s good that the feet they throw in reflect that range, as well.
This helpful accessory can be used to raise or lower the presser foot hands-free.
We all know that when you’re in the zone, it can be annoying to have to stop what you’re doing in order to raise or lower the foot manually, and it can sometimes be intimidating to put your fingers right up close to that needle if the machine happens to go berserk. With this lever, you don’t have to do either. The job is done with a simple bump of your knee!
This is fairly standard, but we were still happy that it was included, even for a relatively straight-forward machine like this one. Even with a sturdy and reliable workhorse, you never know when you will have to troubleshoot, and the manual can be helpful in figuring out some of the more confusing features.
Juki: The Company
Juki has been in business since 1945. If you haven’t heard of them, that’s most likely because they specialize in industrial machinery — not something the average at-home sewer has to worry much about! Don’t let this turn you off though; they’ve been making home sewing machines as well since 1947.
Juki was founded in Japan and swiftly made its way to the Western hemisphere and other areas of the world. They now have offices and dealers in over 100 countries and have sold to customers in nearly 200. It makes sense to us that a company with a history so long and widespread knows a thing or two about reliable machinery.
Juki TL 2000Qi Features
Needle Up and Down Controls
Quilters rejoice — these automatic controls for the needle up/down positions save you the trouble of raising or lowering the needle manually, making it easier to turn corners in your stitching or end seams evenly.
The needle can be easily raised or lowered manually as well, if that’s what you prefer.
Automatic Needle Threader
This feature is admittedly not the most straightforward benefit that the Juki TL-2000Qi offers, but that’s where the user manual comes in handy. We found that it saved us a lot of time and effort, once we got the hang of it.
This machine’s nine-inch throat space already makes for great visibility, but you can’t take advantage of that without good lighting! The powerful LED lights will make it easier to concentrate on your sewing projects without straining your eyes.
We found the lights perfectly sufficient, but note that a few buyers with poor eyesight found that they had to supplement the LEDs with a desk lamp when they were using the machine in a poorly lit room.
Raise and Lower Feed Dogs
This feature is ideal for turning curves in your stitch work and delicate fabrics that you may not want to run over the rough grooves of the feed dogs. Whatever the case, they can be quickly and easily lowered out of the way — a true drop feed.
Alternatively, if you do want to use the feed dogs, them simply raise them back up and have at it!
Automatic Thread Cutter
The control for the thread cutter is located on the foot pedal, so that when you’re ready to snip, you can just rock your foot back and it’s done.
The one-pedal design is efficient, but the downside is that while using the foot pedal, you can accidentally snip the thread at the wrong time if you’re not careful! Again, this takes a little getting used to but is a real god-send when you’re working quickly.
Stitch Length Control
With a lockstitch machine like this one, you don’t have many options when it comes to stitches.
Fortunately, you do get to control the length of the stitches you have got with a dial on the side of the machine, which you can turn between 1-6 for stitches up to 6mm long. This feature is helpful for layering materials and working with different weights of fabrics as well.
Juki TL-2000Qi Sewing and Quilting Machine Review
Excellent Stitch Quality
There’s a reason why the Juki TL 2000Qi is routinely touted as one of the best sewing machines for quilting — the stitching is truly excellent.
Never a missed stitch, always even, and honestly quite beautiful.
We found this machine a huge step up on quilting machines by mass market names like Singer and Brother — it’s more in the same league as a particularly good Janome.
If you’re looking for an exceptional machine that gets the job done, you’ve found a real contender in the Juki TL-2000Qi.
Sturdy and Low Vibration Operation
As you might hope for with a machine at this high price point, the Juki is remarkably well made with quality materials — a true workhorse.
Each part is made of metal, not plastic, so you can be sure of this machine’s durability. The aluminum arm and bed of the machine also reduce its vibrations on lower speeds, which your family, roommates, or neighbors are sure to appreciate.
We loved this feature once we got the hang of it.
The ability to keep your hands and eyes on your work, and your foot on one pedal, streamlines the crafting process and makes concentration so much easier. You also control the speed of the stitching with your pressure on the foot pedal, which is easy to do and saves you some money on a stitch regulator or a more expensive machine that does this automatically.
Large Work Area
Another ‘must-have’ feature in the best quilting machines is always having lots of throat space to be able to truly manipulate your canvas as you work.
The wide throat space on the Juki TL-2000Qi is ideal for this, while the included extension table is also very helpful in this arena.
We were a little taken aback at the whopping 1,500 stitches per minute speed of this sewing and quilting machine once we first sat down to use it. It really is fast — and will likely take you a little time to really get to grips with it.
What with the quality construction and high stitch quality, as well as its fast and efficient operation, it’s easy to see why the Juki TL 2000Qiis routinely the favored machine for professional quilters and sewers.
Take a look at this video to see how fast it works:
Good Value for Money
This sewing and quilting machine is definitely expensive, but we think that — considering the quality and durability of the machine — it actually represents great value for money.
The Juki TL-2000Qi is not a quilting machine for beginners. It’s for serious and committed sewers who don’t mind spending a little extra to get their hands on one of the best machines.
As we’ve said, this machine is fairly straightforward and easy to use, but you do have to use it for a little while in order to totally get the hang of it.
Namely, the automatic threader can be perplexing with its multiple steps, and the manual speed control takes some getting used to. We recommend doing a couple of trial runs before starting in on a serious project.
It doesn’t help that the manual is a little sparse in places, but thankfully, there is lots of information available online.
Just One Stitch
If you’re looking for a versatile sewing machine to use on several different types of projects, this is not the machine for you.
With only one stitch available and no computerized controls, the choices of what this machine can be used for are severely limited, especially if it is your only or main sewing machine.
Obviously it can sew — we found it great for hemming and general mending — but it’s really a quilting machine with some basic sewing on the side. Don’t buy the Juki TL-2000Qi if you’re looking to experiment with different styles of craft sewing!
This machine does require some maintenance. More specifically, it needs to be oiled on a regular basis in order to function well, especially if you plan on using it frequently.
This isn’t difficult to do, but it does take up valuable time and can be messy.
The thread cutter also tends to leave little thread pieces to get caught in the bobbin area, so that will need to be cleaned out every so often as well.
The Juki TL-2000Qi sewing and quilting machine is a workhorse — fast, efficient and high quality. It combines the qualities of both industrial and home sewing machines for a machine that is just about perfect for quilting and more simple projects that only require a straight stitch.
This truly is one of the best sewing machines for quilting.
Despite its quality and durability though, it is not a machine for brand-new sewers or ones looking for a versatile machine for a wide range of projects.
Nevertheless, for the right user, it’s a dream machine.

Juki TL-2000Qi Review
- User Experience
- Sewing Specs
- Ease of Use
We think the Juki TL-2000Qi is one of the best quilting machines on the market right now.
It’s a true workhorse: fast, efficient and sturdy, with an undisputedly excellent stitch quality.
It’s not perfect: it’s lacking in versatility and isn’t well suited to beginners, but there’s no doubting that this is a real pro machine.
