The Bernette 35 Swiss Design Sewing Machine is a machine that aims to be the beginner’s best friend.

This is a mechanical sewing machine that will appeal to those who would prefer to manually operate their machine without relying on a screen or computer.

While it is certainly beginner-friendly, the machine is by no means ‘basic’. It’s capable of handling a variety of sewing projects, from simple repairs to elaborate clothes design.

It comes fully equipped with all the necessary accessories and basic stitches, and it operates smoothly at a decent speed. Truth be told, there’s a lot to love about this model…

In our Bernette B35 review, we take a comprehensive look at one of the most popular Bernette sewing machines on the market today. How does it stack up to the competition? We find out what’s making this sewing machine tick – so you can make the best buying decision.

Bernette B35 Sewing Machine
The Bernette 35 Sewing Machine is perfect for the beginner sewer, looking for a basic yet quality machine to hone their skills. While advanced sewers will quickly grow beyond the features on this model, it’s still a solid machine, that’s portable and sturdy enough to last for years to come.

Bernette b35 Sewing Machine Overview

Who Is It For?

In a market dominated by fancy and elaborate computerised sewing machines, the Bernette 35 is a welcome throwback for those who prefer mechanical machines that they can operate themselves.

It is made by the same company that manufacturers the premium Bernina line of sewing machines. The Bernette series is an affordable option that retains the same high-quality build with a condensed selection of the most popular features. But at a fraction of the price.

For those who don’t require all the bells and whistles of a computerised machine, this machine is the natural successor to the Bernette 33, which is slightly cheaper but sacrifices some key features:

In our opinion, the b35 is a worth paying a little extra for the one-step buttonhole and additional presser feet. But if you know your exact requirements, you may be able to save money by opting for the cheaper b33. They are both fantastically built machines.

The next step up from the B35 means graduating to one of Bernette’s computerised machines. We have a separate review of the B38, which is a wonderful option for those who are looking beyond fully mechanical models. But it’s double the price

Bernette 35 Learning Curve

While the Bernette B35 manages to tick off all our requirements for a starter inexpensive sewing machine, we have found that their bobbin loading technique differs from the industry standard.

This is not an immediate problem, but sewers that eventually decide to graduate to more complicated machines may find themselves confronted with a slight adjustment.

it can definitely be a reason to consider this sewing machine more carefully – do we really think this is reason enough to disregard an otherwise great beginner-level machine?

Not at all!

The Bernette 35 has a huge amount going for it, as we’ll see in our Pros & Cons.

Let’s take a closer look…

The Look

Bernette wants to appeal to new sewers and the aesthetic design of their sewing machines reflect this.

The designers played it safe when it came to choosing the looks, resulting in a sober yet friendly-looking machine that’s unlikely to offend anyone’s tastes – even if your craft room or workstation are very particular in their aesthetics.

While the Bernette 35 has embraced a somewhat standard look of a mostly white casing with black accents, you will find this sewing machine looks friendly and inviting.

Half the patterns have been denoted in a warm brown color, breaking up what would otherwise have been a cold and stern look.

While the size is rather standard, you’ll find the weight is on the lighter side, making this machine easier to take with you for classes or storage.

It weighs in at 16.4 lbs, making it 0.6 lbs heavier than the previous B33 model. You’ll barely notice any difference.

Thanks to the overall neutral but friendly appearance, you won’t have any issues placing this sewing machine in your hobby room. It looks well made and has the same visual appeal that is ever-present in the pricer Bernina range.

Accessories

Since this is a sewing machine aimed at beginners, you’ll find everything that’s necessary to get started included with the Bernette 35.

The bobbins especially are a welcome addition, since you’ll be able to get a feel for your sewing machine without having to purchase additional thread beforehand.

Included with your standard bundle you’ll find:

  • Bobbins (x 4).
  • Seam ripper (buttonhole opener).
  • Screwdriver (large).
  • Screwdriver (small).
  • Needle assortment.
  • Zigzag foot.
  • Hemmer foot.
  • Zipper foot.
  • Satin stitch foot.
  • Button-sew-on foot.
  • Blind stitch foot.
  • Buttonhole foot with slide foot control

There are occasionally bundle deals available that throw in extra tools and accessories for an extra cost.

These deals can be appealing to beginners, but we’d recommend checking what’s included and asking yourself whether you’d save money by simply buying the additional tools you require separately.

It’s unlikely you’ll be calling on everything that’s included in the box unless you work on some very diverse projects!

The Company Behind The Machine

Bernette might not ring any bells just yet, but maybe things will become clear once you know they are a daughter brand of the prestigious Bernina sewing machines.

Establishing your own identity isn’t easy when you share a product, but Bernette has managed to create their own style by being very compatible with newbie sewers.

When you’re unsure if sewing is for you, we recommend having a look at their website as well. Apart from being very user-friendly, they also offer several fun patterns that are meant to ease you into using your sewing machine with confidence.

The Bernette b35 has found the perfect mix between creative opportunities and ease of use. Since the Bernette 35 has been checked for quality by the Bernina brand, you’ll find that this sewing machine doesn’t just qualify to the standards of one company – but to the ideas of two.

What Are The Key Features?

Mechanical

Computerized machines are gaining momentum, but when you’re just learning the basics, it’s not bad at all to use a mechanical variety. On average, they have a longer lifespan and are easier to control.

While you may wander to more computerized sewing machines as your skills increase, the mechanical aspect of this product ensures it’ll be with you for years to come. The 35 is a mechanical sewing machine that will stand the test of time.

If you need computerized controls however? This is the not the right option!

The Bernette 38 is a pricier but extremely effective computerised sewing machine.

Knobs for Settings

Before you get started, you can easily adjust your settings by turning the three knobs located on the front of the Bernette 35 sewing machine (a useful function which is quick to use). The knobs control settings for length, width, and which pattern you wish to use.

Easy-to-read and easy-to-use are the names of this game, and they will surely lower the bar for anyone feeling nervous about their first sewing experiences.

All Basic Stitches Included

Getting started often means figuring out what your new hobby entails. Thanks the included 23 stitches, you’ll have plenty to discover without feeling overwhelmed.

Also, thanks to the great selection of stitches (and excellent stitch quality), you’ll have no problem getting started on any projects, and with the one-step buttonhole, you can add all the buttons your heart desires.

Whether you’re looking to design your own clothes, or home decor, or even sew your own curtains… this machine has everything you need to get going.

The ‘basic’ stitches need not limit your ambitions…

Needle Threader and Thread Cutter

As expected from a mechanical product, both threading your needle and cutting your thread still require some manual input.

While some would prefer to see these features automated on any machine, others see the value in mastering these skills by hand just in case the situation ever calls for it.

We know several sewing purists who would have it no other way… (“Screen and digital controls? No thanks!”)

No matter what your stance, these added features are always a plus, no matter if they’re to be done by hand or automated.

The Positives

Can Handle Heavy Fabrics

This is a point that not all advanced machines can handle, so it is worth mentioning. Provided you use the appropriate feet for the job, this sewing machine can handle denim and softer leather. But you may need to consider an alternative for heavier duty items.

The Bernette 35 is sturdy enough to tackle these materials, making it a more versatile machine overall.

Beginner sewers can start with basic fabrics and will be able to move on to heavier ones with the same machine.

This is good news for those curious about what results these materials could yield, so be sure to give it a try.

Bobbin Compatible

It’s not always easy finding bobbins in the brand and color you need. The Bernette 35 is compatible with universal bobbins, a real lifesaver when you happen to be in a pinch. Quick and easy!

This saves time and money, especially for sewers just starting out. If you have some bobbins on hand, there’ll be no need to head out and purchase some right away.

While you’ll still get the best results with Bernette-brand bobbins, it’s good to know you still have options.

Quality for an Affordable Price

If you’ve had your eyes set on a Bernina machine but the price was out of reach, the Bernette 35 could be your next best bet at a fraction of the cost.

By making the controls on this machine more basic than other models, beginners (and those on a budget) will be able to get their hands on a quality machine.

Whether you’re on a budget, just starting out, or need a secondary machine that’s a little more portable, the Bernette 35 won’t be the reason your wallet is screaming for help.

Compact Size and Stylish Look

The look and size of the Bernette 35 is one big reason sewers may gravitate towards it. It’s great for those who are short on space in their workroom, apartment, or dorm since it won’t hog up all your crafting room.

Note: If space is an issue, you can find a list of our top recommended mini sewing machine models here.

It weighs under twenty pounds, making it an ideal companion for those looking for a machine to take to class, or to lessons away from home.

Its light weight also makes it easy to store away in a closet or cupboard until you need it, though should you choose to display it, its design won’t be an eyesore.

Its minimalist, muted design makes it a machine that can easily blend into any room or crafting space, with a sleek look that’s open for interpretation.

Perfect for Beginners

The basic yet helpful features included with this sewing machine makes it great for beginners, with its easy-to-use design, and a number of stitches and material options to get you started.

The manual functions will allow new users to become accustomed to the functions of a sewing machine before moving onto more complicated, computerized models.

With Bernette, you’ll also have access to a number of helpful tutorials online, as well as some basic sewing projects to try out on their website.

The Negatives

Larger Buttonholes

Some people found that the buttonholes come out slightly larger than the standard button size.

While this issue can be fixed by checking and comparing one to the other, it also is a point that Bernette should keep in mind for any future models.

Atypical Bobbin Loading

The choice for their bobbin loading system is interesting for a machine aimed at beginning sewers since they do not embrace the industry standard in this regard.

Be sure to check tutorials and keep in mind that any future upgrade in your sewing machines will most likely come with a different bobbin-loading approach as well.

Overall Verdict on the Bernette 35

Bernette has made the right call in marketing this sewing machine to beginners. Thanks to the comprehensive beginner stitches and a good mechanical set-up, beginners will find that they have everything they need to try their hand at sewing.

While the atypical bobbin loading might lead to some confusion later down the road, it’s not really a hindrance for most people.

While beginners are certain to get what they need with this sewing machine, more experienced users may lack the challenge they need. A machine with no computerized utility is limiting if you want to bring your creative ideas to life.

All in all, the Bernette 35 Sewing Machine is a good starter experience that’s sure to whet your appetite for more sewing crafts.

If you are looking specifically for a mechanical machine, this one is fab – and gets our glowing endorsement.

It’s beautifully built, and built to last.

We know several sewers who bought it as a ‘backup machine’ but ended up keeping it as their primary machine because they loved how easy it was to operate.

Where to Buy the Bernette 35 Sewing Machine

Just like their parent company Bernina, Bernette has managed to manufacture quality machines, just geared towards a different audience.

If Bernina is marketed towards professionals and advanced hobbyists, Bernette fills the gap by providing accessible, more affordable machines with the same quality expected from Bernina.

As a result, you can pick up the Bernette 35 in many retailers – both online and offline.
