Janome: The Company
Janome was founded in 1921 by Yosaku Osem, but it was known as The Pine Sewing Machine Factory then. It wasn’t named Janome until 1954.
Currently, Janome has divisions in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Europe, Australia, and many more countries.
Their stated mission is to provide sewing machines and sergers that are easy to use, reliable, and made of quality materials so that the user is able “to make the most of their creativity.”
The Janome MOD-19 sewing machine comes with a 25-year limited warranty.
The warranty covers any problems with the “materials or workmanship with the exception of electrical/electronic equipment, which is warranted for a period of two years from the date of original purchase.”
In the first year of owning the machine, you can receive replacements on any parts that are defective and any labor is free of charge.
After the first year, any defective parts can be replaced for free, but you will have to pay for any labor needed to fix your machine.
The warranty does not cover anything that happens because you don’t maintain or repair your machine, nor does it cover any damage caused by “normal wear and tear.”
Additionally, the warranty only applies to machines that are bought through an Authorized Janome Retailer. Make sure you check before purchasing your new machine.
19 Built-In Stitches
The Janome MOD-19 comes with 19 stitches built right into the machine, including a single four-step buttonhole.
The stitches range from a straight stitch to a zigzag stitch to decorative and satin stitches and can be selected by using the dial on the front.
For most projects, you will find the stitch you need.
Built-In Needle Threader
You’ll no longer need your reading glasses or a magnifying glass when threading a needle. The MOD-19 comes with a needle threader right on the machine, so the entire ordeal is handled automatically.
Just follow the diagram provided with the machine and you’ll be sewing in no time
The MOD-19 also has a top-loading, drop-in bobbin. A top-loading bobbin is much easier to insert into the machine and much simpler to deal with if the thread jams.
Why don’t all machines have top-loading or drop-in bobbin? We don’t have an answer for that, but we’re pleased that this one does. It makes the process of sewing so much nicer.
Five-Piece Feed Dog
This machine also has a five-piece feed dog system.
This means your fabric will move smoothly and easily through the machine and you are less likely to miss a stitch or hit a snag.
Adjustable Stitch Length/Width
There are also dials on the front of the MOD-19 that allow you to adjust the length and the width of your stitches.
Depending on what you’re making, you may desire stitches that are shorter or longer, or skinnier or thicker.
The MOD-19 also comes with a removable storage compartment that, when detached, gives you a free arm to work with.
What does this mean? If you’re working on the hem of a shirt sleeve, you can slide the garment directly onto the arm, improving the entire process.
You also don’t have to worry about sewing the cuff of a shirt closed because you accidentally put the whole sleeve through the machine. (Don’t judge!)
You can also drop the feed dog on the machine, making it perfect for free-motion sewing and quilting. You just have to flick the lever, and you’re ready to go.
You can also use this feature when sewing a buttonhole as well.
The Janome MOD-19 also includes a lever so you can use a reverse stitch.
This works great for locking a stitch and ensuring all your hard work doesn’t come undone.
There is also an LED light built into the MOD-19. No need to sew in the dark or rearrange your sewing room lamps to accommodate your project.
Now, no matter what time of day or night it is, you’ll be able to see what you’re doing.
Janome MOD-19 Easy-to-Use Sewing Machine Review
With 19 built-in stitches, you can do your every day, small sewing jobs as well as your big quilting projects.
The adjustable stitch and width length gives you another range of options depending on what you’re making.
A versatile machine makes it easy for beginners to grow into more experienced sewers without upgrading. This machine is great for trying out a variety of projects, materials, and techniques.
Unless you’re performing advanced sewing, the MOD-19 has all the features you could ever want or need.
Easy to Use
Just as the name promises, the MOD-19 is also simple to operate. With just the drop-in bobbin and the needle threader alone, your job is made 100 times easier.
The drop-in bobbin means you can see exactly what you’re doing when inserting it, and it’s easy to reach if there are any problems.
As a plus, is there anything better than a machine which threads the needle for you? We think not!
Beginners won’t feel intimidated by this machine and those switching machines won’t have to deal with a big learning curve.
Great for Learning
Because of all the easy-to-use features on the MOD-19, it is a great starter machine for beginners.
Thanks to its classic design and straightforward settings, this is an ideal machine to learn on and grow with, especially thanks to its versatility.
You’ll have stitches and features that you know how to use right off the bat, and then, once you get some experience under your belt, you’ll have other features to help you along with more advanced projects.
Compact but Durable
Janome is known for their well-made machines. With its fully metal interior, this machine is built to last, even under the care of heavy jobs or rough handling.
Its build, along with Janome’s long warranty, ensures that you’ll have a machine that will last throughout the years.
But just because its built to last doesn’t mean that it’s bulky. The Janome MOD-19 is quite compact and lightweight weighing in at just over 10 lbs.
You’ll have a sturdy machine that’s easy to keep on your crafting table or desk, in small spaces or apartments, and won’t be a hassle to tuck away and take out when needed.
A number of users stated how quiet this machine is. A quiet machine means you won’t have a rattly workspace to keep you and your housemates annoyed.
If you like to sew at night or early in the morning, and you don’t want to wake up anyone in the household, this might be the sewing machine to go with.
Plastic Presser Foot
While durable, thanks to the metal build, the presser foot is plastic. On most machines, the presser foot is made of metal and we found this difference to be strange.
This doesn’t match up to the heavy-duty build of the sewing machine and this decision makes it less durable than its competitors.
Difficult to Change the Feet
Perhaps because of the presser foot’s material, testers found that the feet are difficult to change.
The MOD-19 comes with a bunch of presser feet, so it’s unfortunate that users might struggle with getting them off and on.
Not Great for Heavyweight Fabric
A few users also noted that this machine was not strong enough to handle thicker fabrics.
So, if you often sew heavy denim, wool, or any other kind of thick fabric, you might want to look into a more industrial machine that can handle the task.
After going through all the positives and the negatives, we do recommend the Janome MOD-19 Easy-to-Use Sewing Machine.
With its 19 built-in stitches, its built-in lamp, and its metal interior, you can’t ask for much more.
While the plastic presser foot and the difficulty changing the feet is a problem, those issues are not enough to dissuade our interest.
