Janome: The Company

Founded in 1921 by Yosaku Osem, Janome was first named the Pine Sewing Machine Factory. It wasn’t until 1954 that it grew into the name Janome Sewing Co. as we know it today.

Presently, Janome has divisions in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Europe, Australia, and many more countries. Their stated mission is to create sewing machines and sergers that are easy to use, reliable, and made of quality materials. They want to ensure their users are able “to make the most of their creativity.”

The Warranty

The Janome MB-4S Embroidery Machine comes with a 25-year limited warranty. The warranty covers any issues with the “materials or workmanship with the exception of electrical/electronic equipment, which is warranted for a period of two years from the date of original purchase.”

During the first year of ownership, you can receive replacements for any parts that are defective and receive any labor free of charge. After that first year, any defective parts can be replaced for free, but you must pay for the labor. The warranty doesn’t cover anything that happens due to poor maintenance or lack of repairs, nor does it cover any damage caused by “normal wear and tear.”

This warranty only applies to machines that are bought through an Authorized Janome Retailer.

The Janome MB-4S Embroidery Machine comes with almost everything you could need. You get fifty different designs built into the machine, ten different fonts for monogramming, and two- and three-letter monogramming. Whether you’re after a floral design or a formal one, you’ll find it here. As a bonus, should the machine lack your favorite design, you can upload it into the memory.

You can use several formats for uploading your own embroidery designs. The machine will accept .jef+ format, .jef format, and .dst format.

You can also edit designs in the remote computer screen. Capabilities include enlarging or reducing the size, rotating, turning the design over, drag and drop, re-edit, zoom, arc, and combine. Most of these features can be used in tiny, one percent increments, so you can really create the exact embroidery that you want for your project.

Remote Computer Screen

This Janome MB-4S also comes with a 5.7-inch remote computer screen (RCS), which serves as the main hub for this machine. From here, the designs can be selected, edited, and added to – with a choice of up to 65,536 colors. As a plus, this one RCS can control several machines, should you need to link up more.

This is how you select designs and look through the available patterns, and also how you edit them and save new patterns.

LED Light

This Janome embroidery machine also includes four LED lights just above the needle, so you have a clear view of the work area. This allows you to embroider at night, place the machine in a dark corner without a lamp, or have more general precision with your stitches.

Automatic Thread Cutter

A helpful feature on this machine is the automatic thread cutter. As the name implies, it automatically cuts jump threads or threads between letters when monogramming. This saves you time and removes the hassle of pausing to cut each thread individually.

Automatic Needle Threader

Speaking of automatic convenience, this Janome also features an automatic needle threader. This makes setting up the machine for daily use even easier. No more straining your fingers, vision, or patience!

Memory Storage

This embroidery machine also comes with its own memory unit, which can store an impressive number of stitches and designs. In total, it can hold 3MB – or about 1,500,000 stitches and up to 100 designs. You aren’t limited to the build-in choices on this machine.

Extra Large Bobbin

Running out of thread can be frustrating, but the bobbin on this machine is 1.4 times larger than a regular bobbin. That will help you complete larger sections of embroidery without having to wind your bobbin again.

Fast Stitching Capability

The Janome MB-4S can stitch up to 800 embroidery stitches per minute, letting you fly through big projects with ease. This machine can stitch three times faster than single-thread embroidery machines.

Janome MB-4S Four Needle Embroidery Machine

Bobbin Winding Motor

Not only does the machine have a larger-than-average bobbin (1.4x larger than a regular one), it has a motor specifically for winding the bobbin. That means that while the machine is stitching, you can also wind a bobbin simultaneously and have it ready to swap when necessary. The bobbin winder runs at 2,000 rotations per minute.

This embroidery machine comes with both an instruction booklet and also an instructional CD-ROM to help ease the learning curve on these higher-end, professional-quality machines. Some users also found great set-up and instructional videos on YouTube, which can assist in making it easy to take the machine from unboxing straight into creating beautiful embroidery projects.

Built-In Computer Memory

The Janome MB-4S comes with many designs already programmed into the machine, but it also has the capability to save imported designs. To make that process easier, you can plug your PC directly into the machine, and it has 3 megabytes of memory. That can save roughly 1,500,000 stitches! That equals out to somewhere around 100 different designs.

The machine is advertised to come with fifty different designs, but with some computer work of your own, your machine could have up to 150 designs saved and ready to be embroidered at a moment’s notice.

Hoop Size Categories

The fifty built-in designs are categorized by hoop size, so you’ll know exactly what to use for your project. The fifty designs are spread across seven different screens in the machine’s computer. Page 1 and page 2 of the designs are made for Hoop M2 (MB Hoop126 x 110). Pages 3 through 6 are designed for Hoop M1 (MB Hoop 240 x 200) and page 7 are designed for Hoop M3 (MB Hoop 50 x 50).

Once you familiarize yourself with the order of the designs and the size of the hoops, it’s a snap to find and select exactly the design you need for the project that you are working on.

The Positives

Easy Set Up

While there are many steps involved, the Janome MB-4S Embroidery Machine is rather easy to set up. It should take you between 20-30 minutes, or less time if you have experience with the machine. The instruction manual provides clear directions with helpful graphs and pictures, so you can take the process one step at a time.

Once it’s set up, you can dive right into embroidering.

Easy to Use

While this machine may look complicated to use, it’s very straightforward. To begin, just ensure that the bobbin is threaded and inserted into its compartment. Let the automatic needle threader perform its job, and then you’re left to navigate the computer screen. From here, pick the design or lettering you want. Next, place your fabric under the needle and in the embroidery hoop, and let this Janome get to work. This all takes a few minutes or less!

With fifty different designs and ten different lettering fonts, it’s easy to consider this Janome versatile. It contains most the patterns you could need, and should you find it lacking a particular design, this can be easily uploaded into its memory. Just connect the machine to your computer and send the design through. This allows the machine to expand with your own embroidery ambitions.

With automatic features, built-in patterns, a user-friendly computer screen, lighting, and connectivity with your personal laptop or desktop, it’s easy to tell: this machine is very convenient. As a plus, the huge accessory pack ensures you never have to make secondary purchases; everything is included. Once this Janome is unboxed, you need only buy the fabric and dive right in.

The Negatives

Very Expensive

A wide range of features, bonus accessories, and a convenient design are great. However, they do come at a cost. This machine is just under $5,000 on Amazon. That’s a hefty sum, which may not suit hobbyists or beginning embroiderers. Nonetheless, those who are professionals, embroidery experts, or who tackle a great number of projects may find this price tag reasonable for the high quality they’re receiving.

Overall Verdict

After going over all the positives and negatives, we do recommend the Janome MB-4S Embroidery Machine. With the range of convenient features and included tools, it’s hard to discover fault in this model. While beginners may dislike the high price tag, if you’re seeking a high quality machine for large, long-term projects, it could be your perfect fit.
