Janome: The Company

Janome began its illustrious career as a provider of sewing machines in 1954, having previously be known as The Pine Sewing Machine Factory.

Based out of Tokyo, Japan, Janome now has international reach, selling machines that allow for basic sewing as well as embroidery and quilting. The most recent bobbin design released by Janome is a play-off of their name, which, in English, translates to “snake’s eye.”

The Warranty

The Janome warranty ensures that the DC2014 can be maintained for up to 25 years after purchase. Electronic components can be supplied and repaired under warranty for up to five years after purchase at no additional cost to you; general labor will be provided by Janome through one year after purchase free of charge. Afterwards, labor done by Janome employees comes at an additional charge.

The Janome DC2014 is certainly a sewing machine that we’d describe as feature rich.

Here are a few of the things you’ll enjoy once you buy it:

50 in-built Stitches

janome dc2014 review

The machine comes with 50 different stitches, all of which can be easily referenced on the machine’s body and through the easy-to-use stitch selector.

These stitches cover all of the basics and then some, ensuring that you can undertake a large swath of projects, and include three one-step buttonholes as well, making clothing work that much easier.

We’d usually expect a few more in-built stitches for a sewing machine at this price point, to be perfectly honest, although we do feel like there’s enough here except for the most experimental of craft sewers.

Built-In Needle Threader

The Janome DC2014’s automatic needle threader lends to its ease of use. No need to wreck your eyes trying to thread your needle: it’s just a four step process before you’ll be set and ready to sew.

The automatic needle threader only works with needles between #11 and #16 — you’ll need to thread manually if you’re using another size. Easy instructions for this can be found in the manual.

Auto Declutch Bobbin Winder

We have to admit that we were a little arrogant going in with this machine and neglected to read the manual.

However, after some close but no cigar situations with the bobbin, we finally gave in and gave the instructions a quick glance.

Winding the bobbin and setting the thread spool is actually very quick and easy if you follow the instructions, so we’d highly recommend you do that.

There’s a handy bobbin winding guide that should be able to help you out if you’re feeling a little confused. We found it an intuitive process after trying it for the first time.

Superior Feed System and 7-Piece Feed Dogs

The DC2014’s Superior Feed System ensures that there’ll be no loose stitches on your latest project. The Superior Feed System is among the best Janome has to offer: it provides a steadier run than a stand-alone foot.

Within minutes of using this machine, we were highly impressed by the quality of stitching, and we’re sure this is thanks to the Superior Feed System in place.

Speed Control Slider and Size Adjustment

If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed or if you simply want to exert more control over your stitching, you’ll definitely appreciate the speed control slider on the front of the Janome DC2014.

It’s a true speed slider — it doesn’t just offer a couple of different speeds — so you can personalize this entirely to your preferences.

You can also adjust the width and length of your sizes easily via the LCD screen.

Up/Down Needle Position, Auto-Lock and Reverse Stitch Buttons

A common feature in most good sewing machines, the DC2014 benefits from a simple push of the button to control the needle position.

It also benefits from an Auto-Lock button feature that work when you select 01, 02, 10 or 11 stitch patterns. This ensures that the stitch is locked and automatically stopped.

And thank goodness for the reverse stitch button! This works well at sewing backwards although unfortunately only works for patterns 01, 02, 10 and 11.

Drop Feed and Free Arm Functions

For all of us that appreciate some free motion sewing and quilting, you’re sure to love the easy drop feed and free arm functions.

The free arm is ideal for garment making, particularly when it comes to sleeves and darning.

The drop feed is powered by simply pressing the lever to the right, which will automatically lower the feed dogs for you. Pushing the lever to the left will raise them again.

Janome DC2014 Computerized Sewing Machine Review

The Janome DC2014 presents itself as more than just a standard beginner’s machine with all of its accessories and features. Is it really as great of a machine, though, as it appears?

Let’s take a look…

The Positives

Sews Like a Dream

This is truly one of the best sewing machine experiences we’ve had in terms of truly excellent stitch quality.

Thanks for the Superior Feed System, you can depend on the Janome DC2014 to reliably produce precise and accurate stitching, just the way you want it, time after time.

Intermediate and advanced sewers will automatically see the quality of their projects increase exponentially when they switch to the DC2014 from a lesser machine. Even though it’s comparatively expensive, we feel that the price tag is justified by the quality.

We’ve mentioned before that the machine is very heavy, but this weight lends a high level of stability and heavy duty sewing to the experience. Perfect.

Easy to Use

The Janome DC2014 makes a point in establishing its ease of use.

Not only is the manual very easy to follow, but the machine itself is straightforward to understand.

The easy-to-use stitch selector, automatic needle threader, and variety of feet included as accessories present even beginner sewers with an extensive tool kit that will only grow as they improve.

You’re in Control

One of the things we love about this machine is how much autonomy you have over your sewing projects.

You can choose the speed, stitch size and design and the options for free arm and free motion sewing are equally encouraging. You can essentially do what you like with this machine.

We’re sure that the Janome DC2014 sewing machine will become a mainstay in our craft room, mostly because it’s so good at so many different things.

General sewing, mending, quilting, garment making, scrapbooking — you name it, this machine can do it.

While beginners may be a little overwhelmed with the breadth of the Janome’s abilities, we think any level of sewer will find a huge amount of value in this machine.

The range of stitches and accessories supports craft sewers while the utility side of the machine is well suited to more general home projects. This machine will evolve with you.

We just wish it had a little more throat space for really large quilt projects!

Other Things We Love:

  • Bright LED lights
  • Never jams up

The Negatives

Of course, no sewing machine was created perfect and the Janome DC2014 is sadly no exception.

Here’s a couple of issues worth considering before you buy.

No Automatic Thread Cutter

The Janome DC2014 may come with an automatic needle threader, but it doesn’t come with an automatic thread cutter. This means that some of your projects may come away with thread tails, and if you don’t already have a thread cutter, you may have to go out a buy one. Boo.

Lacking Mobility

This is also not a machine you’ll be wanting to move around with a lot. Weighing in at 27.1 pounds, the Janome DC2014 weighs about as much as a medium sized dog.

It’s a machine you could strain yourself moving, so once you find the perfect place for it, you may want to keep it there.

The Janome DC2014 is also pushing the high end on price for a sewing machine.

The machine may well be worth it with all of its accessories, features, and ability to evolve with your sewing ability, but it may cost just a little too much to be worth it for some sewers.

Overall Verdict

It’s hard not to fall in love with the Janome DC2014 computerized sewing machine. It sews like a dream, is incredibly versatile and is easy to use to boot.

It’s definitely expensive, so we’d only recommend it for intermediate and advanced sewers, and perhaps committed beginners.

The DC2014 is also very heavy — which is undoubtedly a great boon in its stability and heavy duty abilities, but means that it’s no good for travelling with you.

It’s a stay-at-home sewing machine!
