Backed by a 30-day warranty, this mini machine can function anywhere to get simple jobs done quickly and easily.
While finding a sewing machine can be quite simple if you know where to look, choosing one that will fit into a small space or that you can easily take on the road is a more difficult task.
The Varmax 201 Mini Sewing Machine is one such machine on the market that offers these advantages.
With its portability, its extension table, and its weight of only 2.8 lbs., this mini sewing machine is great for beginners seeking an effective (and adorable!) tool for their crafts and small sewing projects.
If you’re looking for a machine that will fit in an apartment the size of a closet, this might be the one for you.
There are some complaints of it arriving with pieces missing, having the needle or pedal break, and it moving around while in use, but let’s take a closer look at this little machine.
The pros could outweigh the cons to make it the right choice for you.

Varmax: The Company
Varmax does not have much of an online presence. Because they are a fairly new company, there isn’t a ton of information known about them.
What we do know, according to their Amazon page, is that Varmax began in 2001 as a manufacturer before combining manufacturing with retail to become a private brand.
Their mission is to make ‘qualified, creative, convenient products’ while providing their customers with excellent service.
The warranty for the Varmax 201 Sewing Machine is fairly straightforward. If you should have any problems with the machine, you have 30 days to send it back for an exchange or refund.
Perhaps because the sewing machine is under $30, there is not a more extensive warranty.
The Varmax 201 comes with an extension table so that you have more room for fabric when you’re working on a large project.
It also works to help stabilize the machine, so it doesn’t tip over when you are working with lots of fabric or fabric of a heavier weight.
Don’t be fooled by the price; this machine features many things you would find on a bigger model. One is the speed control, which can be adjusted from low to high.
This is especially useful for beginning sewers, who might want to start on the lower speed, and once they gain some experience and confidence, then move to the higher speed.
That makes it a great machine to learn on, even for young kids!
The 201 Mini also comes with a mini thread cutter on the front of the machine. You don’t have to worry about keeping scissors by your side at all times just to cut the thread.
This also makes it advantageous if you’re on the go and have forgotten your greater sewing kit.
Runs on Batteries
This machine also runs on batteries. If you need to mend a pair of pants or a shirt sleeve when you are travelling or even at work, you can easily do it with the 201.
Just make sure you have a new set of batteries in the machine and you’ll be ready to go.
For heavy-duty jobs, the machine does come with an AC adapter.
Just because the 201 is a mini sewing machine doesn’t mean you have to buy any hard-to-find needles.
This machine will work with needle sizes including, 75/11, 80/12, 90/14, and 100/16. The smaller needles will work for thinner fabric and the larger ones are best for sewing thicker, sturdier fabric.
Varmax 201 Mini Sewing Machine with Extension Table Review
At only 2.8 lbs., you can imagine how easily you can bring this machine with you everywhere.
Whether you’re taking a quick sewing class, or need a simple machine on hand while you’re helping a friend get dressed for an event, this machine won’t be a hassle to move around.
If you choose to keep it as a stationary machine, it won’t be hard at all to find space for it on a crafting table, or any table for that matter.
And at only 8×6 inches, you can store it in a cupboard or closet when you’re not using it. This makes it a great option for those who are short on space, work in a small office or only need a sewing machine occasionally.
If you thought you didn’t have the space to do your sewing crafts or even fix a hem, the Varma 201 proves you wrong.
Easy to Use
Once you read the instructions or view any tutorial videos you find online (there are quite a few), you will find it quite simple to work with this machine.
Young children will be able to teach themselves or update their knowledge on the go with minimal effort.
A number of users also mentioned how simple the manual was to understand. They found all of the instructions easy to comprehend and nothing was worded in a way that was too complicated.
Beginning sewers will be able to orient themselves without effort making this a great machine to get your feet wet in the world of sewing.
It will be easy to learn the basics before upgrading to a more professional machine.
Use It Anywhere
There are not many sewing machines on the market that you can use even if your power goes out. The 201 is one of the few options.
Since it runs on batteries, you can take it anywhere (even camping in the woods if you wanted to) and sew no matter the circumstances. Pretty cool, right?
And in the chance that your batteries do die, or you don’t have access to spares, never fear! You can easily use this sewing machine’s AC adapter and plug it into the wall so the sewing never stops.
Sews Different Materials
This machine is also able to sew many kinds of fabrics. From denim to shirt materials to curtains to canvas, as long as the material is not too soft, too thin, or overly thick, it will work just fine on this machine.
We do suggest that you change the needle depending on the kind of fabric you’re using, however. And don’t forget the added extension table is there to help you out with bigger and heavier material too!
It’s rare to find a functional sewing machine for under a hundred dollars, but the Varmax 201 Mini Sewing Machine is a nice surprise.
This machine comes in at a fraction of that, making it easy to add the Varmax 201 Mini to your sewing arsenal.
Those looking to test out their sewing skills won’t need to invest in an expensive machine, and the price makes this an affordable secondary option for sewers on the go and travelers.
With the price Varmax also grants a 30-day warranty to cover any manufacturing errors or defects that users may find in the machine.
If you do find a fault, you’ll have to contact the company or retailer and they will decide whether to repair or replace your machine.
While it is great that this machine is lightweight, because it allows anyone to carry it, some found it was too lightweight.
It seems to move around on the table due to the vibrations that occur while it’s sewing, which, when there is a needle involved, can get very dangerous. Watch out for your fingers!
There are also a few users that found the sewing machine stopped working after they used it. Some had it stop working after one or two uses and others were able to use it a little longer before it malfunctioned.
It might be a “you get what you pay for” situation. When considering this purchase this, keep that in mind.
If you have any problems with the machine, contacting or finding out more about the company is difficult. They don’t have a website or a phone number available on their Amazon page.
The only way you can contact them online is by asking a question on Amazon and hoping they answer it.
There were also a few cases where not everything in the order arrived. Some of the accessories were missing.
Amazon will provide an exchange or refund, so while this may not be a complete turn-off for you, it’s something to consider.
After weighing the pros and cons, we are recommending the Varmax 201 Mini Sewing Machine.
The fact that it’s compact is great! It’s easy to use, and it comes with the extension table which gives it points. But the fact that it dances across your table at times, and that the package may be delivered incomplete, is worrisome.
Those looking for a machine with more features for more advanced projects will want to keep searching, but as it comes in at an affordable price, it may be a cost-effective and worthwhile risk.
Those just starting out with sewing, or those who sew occasionally will find this machine’s features to be to their advantage.
