It comes with 30 built-in stitches and 200 embroidery designs, is easy to set up, and also includes an automatic needle threader.

Unfortunately, not everyone has a good experience. Some testers uncovered nasty malfunctions, some found the software to be difficult, and others warned that it may not suit new or beginning sewers.

Singer XL-420 Sewing and Embroidery Machine: The Details

The Look

The Singer XL-420 Sewing and Embroidery Machine offers a simplistic appearance. The unassuming design is offset by buttons on the back panel of the machine and the USB plug that can link up to a computer.

With an almost completely white exterior, it’s decorated by black-grey borders and pictures for the stitches.

Finally, there is a floral and stitch design across the front, which makes it less plain. If you’re not using the extension board, the machine is approximately the size of a normal microwave.

Singer: The Company

Founded in 1851 by Isaac Merritt Singer and Edward Clark, in New York City, Singer has quickly become “one of the world’s leading sellers of consumer and artisan sewing machines.”

Singer also states they’re “one of the world’s most trusted and recognizable brands.” Having created the world’s first portable machine, the first zigzag machine, and one of the first computerized machines, they’re certainly cutting-edge.

Presently, they make computerized, heavy duty, and quilting machines, as well as sergers and embroidery or mechanical machines.

The Warranty

The Singer XL-420 is covered by a 25-year warranty. The head or hub of the machine, along with its parts, are guaranteed to be free of manufacturing defects for the first 25 years after purchase.

If a defect appears in that time, Singer will provide free replacement parts, but you must pay for the labor.

However, if only one year has passed since you bought the machine, Singer will pay for the replacement parts and the labor. You may have to provide the shipping costs.

Features

30 Built-In Stitches

The Singer XL-420 comes with 30 built-in stitches – a strong range to suit most sewing projects. You get six basic stitches, five stretch stitches, 17 decorative, and two different one-step buttonholes.

As such, whether you’re hemming a pair of pants or working on quilt squares, this Singer has you covered.

200 Embroidery Designs

The XL-420 Sewing and Embroidery Machine also include 200 different embroidery designs. If you’re after one in particular, it’s likely available in this package.

The options range from small to large, complicated to simple, and a choice few are – quite literally – endless. Specifically, 20 endless designs are available, which can be used freehand or with the included embroidery hoops.

If those 200 aren’t enough, the USB port allows you to sync up the sewing machine to your computer and transfer custom designs with ease.

Drop-In Bobbin

The drop-in (or top-loading bobbin) is one of the best features a sewing machine can have. This makes inserting your bobbin easy and without fuss.

As a bonus, the bobbin is located near the needle plate, where you can observe it throughout the sewing process.

Notice a jam or the beginnings of a tangle? Just pause your sewing, resolve the issue, and get back to work. No need to wait until the problem has already escalated out of sight!

Automatic Needle Threader

Threading a needle is time-intensive and can strain the eyes. As such, an automatic threader can be a godsend.

To use the needle threader on this machine, start by feeding the top thread through the machine until you reach the needle. Hook the thread in the twin guides and allow it to sit on the thread cutter.

Pull down the threading lever to the lowest position. Release the lever and the thread will go through the eye of the needle. Pull the thread loop away from you – and voila!

Needle threaded! Mission accomplished.

As a bonus, this machine has not one, two, or three, but six lights located in the needle area to help sewers see their work. If you’re sewing in a dimly lit room or through the night, you’ll be able to see your progress with ease.

Computer Requirements

This Singer features a USB port, allowing you to directly connect it with your computer and transfer designs. If the 200 included don’t suit you, then it’s simple to expand your collection personally.

To take advantage of the USB port and its linking abilities, it’s important to have the right computer specs. This Singer, unfortunately, doesn’t work with Apple or Mac computers – only with Windows XP, 7, or 8.

Make sure your computer is up to those specifications if you plan to transfer designs you’ve created personally or those found online.

The Positives

Versatile

With the ability to sew and embroider, as well as access online or personally-created designs with your PC, this machine is highly versatile. The included designs are vast and customizable, especially with the ‘endless’ selection of 20.

Whether you’re embroidering a shirt or just sewing up a hem, you have the toolset to fit nearly any project – all in one place.

best sewing machine for embroidery

This is great for sewers who want to hone their skills in both departments. You won’t need to have two separate machines sitting on your counter to get the task done.

In addition to embroidery, you’ll have a number of stitches to ‘sew’ through with the Singer XL-420 to keep sewers of varying levels very occupied.

Convenient

Users were pleased by the XL-420’s ‘one-stop shop’ nature; all the features are right on the machine or included in the box. There’s no need for secondary purchases or extra accessories to get started right away.

When you begin a project, you can just sit down at the machine, plug it in, and go – without fetching additional items or struggling to develop embroidery designs by hand.

That’s a high level of convenience. As a plus, the automatic needle threader and cutter ensure you don’t even need a pair of scissors.

Whether you’re newer to the craft, or just switching machines, the Singer XL-420 doesn’t make it hard to get accustomed to an easier way of sewing.

Easy to Set Up

Even if you’re a beginner to sewing and/or embroidery, you can easily set up this XL-420. Just thread the bobbin and place it in the case near the needle plate.

Then, pull the thread into the top threader until you reach the needle threader. Using that, the needle will automatically thread itself, leaving you to select a stitch or embroidery design.

Finally, you can run your chosen fabric through the machine. It’s that simple! Singer doesn’t give you much to fuss and worry about with the XL-420.

Durable

Singer sewing machines are known for being well-constructed and long-lasting. The Singer XL-420 is no different.

Thanks to its heavy duty frame, you won’t have to worry about this machine collapsing under the pressure. You also won’t have to worry about it skipping or bouncing across a table thanks to its sturdy build.

In addition to a durable body, Singer’s long warranty will ensure your sewing and embroidery machine keeps working with little worry from you.

The Negatives

Software Can Be Difficult

A few testers encountered problems with the software. It was difficult to load, and some users even mentioned having to reload the software multiple times to make it function.

While the software isn’t an absolute necessity on this machine, it does expand its capabilities and provides you with ideas. However, testers reported it as more of a nuisance than a help.

Malfunctions

A few testers did mention certain malfunctions. Problems arose either with the thread or needle breaking or with the bobbin getting locked and the thread becoming tangled.

It’s important to have the tension right and to avoid overly thick fabric, which the machine struggles with.

It can take several different materials but isn’t suited for thicker denim or multiple layers of medium to heavy fabric. This wasn’t an issue for most testers, however, so it may be a case of user error.

Best for More Advanced Sewers

While this Singer sewing and embroidery machine is easy to set up and use, it may be best suited to advanced sewers.

The more complicated software matched to the intricacies of dual sewing-embroidering, make it difficult for beginners to master, especially if you have less than a year or two of experience.

Embroidery is difficult enough – the machines that utilize this are even more complicated. Some skill behind you will make the functions much easier to figure out.

Overall Verdict

After combing through all the positives and negatives, we do recommend the Singer Xl-420 Sewing and Embroidery Machine.

It offers a wide range of stitches and designs, it’s easy to use, and the automatic needle threader boosts its convenience.

While some users encountered problems, they were few and far between. If you’re after a machine that will help you sew and embroider, this may be the perfect option for you!

Where to Buy the Singer XL-420 Sewing and Embroidery Machine

The Singer brand barely needs an introduction, known to sewers around the globe. Singer has dominated the market for years, with products available worldwide.

As such, items like the Singer XL-420 won’t be hard to find in-store or online. While it’s best to check department, craft, and sewing stores, you can kick-start your search with the following online retailers.
