Singer: The Company
Singer Corporation has been in the sewing machine business since 1851 and, to this day, continues to work on their specialties. From winning first prize at the Paris World’s Fair to demonstrating the first workable electric machine in 1910, the company has shown they know their way around a sewing machine. They have remained true to their roots and remain one of the top-five names in the sewing world to this day.
In 2011 the company celebrated the 160th anniversary of Isaac Singer’s first patented practical sewing machine, showing just how far dedication and love for the craft can take a company.
The Singer 7256 Fashion Mate sewing machine falls under the limited 25-year warranty, which is standard for most sewing machines. The warranty ensures that the machine and its additional parts will arrive in functioning order.
During the first year after purchase, Brother will replace or repair parts. Electronic components and printed circuit boards enjoy a two-year guarantee, while the chassis is insured for 25 years after purchase.
Because the validity of your warranty is determined by your receipt date, make sure that you keep it safe!
As always, make sure to check with your supplier, as their warranty guidelines may differ from what is described here.
Singer 7256 Features
70 Built-In Stitches
The 70 built-in stitches cover a nice range for any possible project — fashion or otherwise — including 6 full automatic, one step buttonholes.
There’s also an assortment of decorative stitches thrown in there for good measure, plus 8 essential and 8 stretch stitches.
Push Button Stitch Selection
As well as having the full breadth of stitches printed on the front of the machine, all you need to do is press a button to select the one you want.
The machine will also automatically select the optimal settings for length, width and tension.
Tying off both straight and decorative stitches can be done with a push of the button, strengthening your work and making it more resistant to daily use.
Automatic Needle Threading and Tension Adjusting
The automatic needle threader, in combination with the automatic tension adjuster, realize Singer’s ideology of making sewing faster and less tedious.
Singer estimate that you can thread the entire machine, from spool to the eye of the needle in just 6 seconds.
We’ve yet to get it down to quite that fast, but it’s certainly a quick process.
Easy to Load, Top Drop-In Bobbin System
The top-drop bobbin system has a clear cover, which makes it easy to keep an eye on your remaining thread, while the bobbin winder stops the moment the bobbin has been completely filled.
The six-segment feeding system makes feeding more accurate and gives a smoother finish.
StayBright LED Light
The Singer 7256 Fashion Mate is really well lit for a mid-market sewing machine.
The bulb is bright and long lasting — supposedly up to 100,000 hours — and is very beneficial to tired eyes.
- Snap on presser feet
- Automatic reverse button
- 13 needle positions
- Twin needle capability
- Automatic presser foot pressure
- Extra high presser foot lifter
Singer 7256 Fashion Mate Review
Quick and Easy
From the automatic threader to the automatic tension adjuster, the Singer Fashion Mate does its best to ensure the smoothest possible use.
Thanks to the bobbin winder, there’s no risk of overwinding your bobbins, and the automatic reverse button makes it much easier to be inventive with your patterns.
The feet adjust their pressure to the fabric you are using, limiting the risk of getting your fabric snagged.
Beginners and more experienced sewers alike will find the Singer 7256 easy and generally a joy to use.
Lots of Built-In Stitches
70 stitches is a pretty respectable amount of stitches, and they include six fully automatic buttonholes, as well as several essential, decorative, and stretch stitches.
These are suitable for pretty much any fashion object you can imagine, and they’re easily accessible through the buttons on the front of the machine.
While it’s not the most impressive number of stitches, it’s excellent considering the mid market price point and there’s still more than enough to cover your needs – with a few extras besides.
Fine Needle Work
Apart from being able to use two needles at once, the Fashion Mate also features 13 different needle positions. This gives you more room for creativity in your project and, as an expert, more control over what you’re doing.
We love the amount of creative freedom offered by this machine, and we can certainly see why it’s so damn popular with fashionistas and wannabe clothes designers.
Super Smooth Feeding System
A good feeding system makes it much easier to get great results from your sewing.
Any machine that wants to offer a good quality finish does its best to include a feeding system that is worth your time, and Singer have delivered on this desire with the 6 segment feed.
No Heavy Duty Fabrics
If you’re skilled enough, you can use this machine for heavier fabrics without breaking it.
However, if you’re a beginner or don’t want to test your luck even as an expert, don’t risk it. It’s not designed for heavy-duty work, and if you’re looking to make it your go-to machine for that style of project, it won’t be able to keep up.
Our advice? Invest in a good, heavy duty machine if you expect you’ll be doing lots of heavy duty work.
A Learning Curve for Beginners
You can’t just jump into this machine with your eyes closed and no experience, and expect to produce a Dior worthy garment.
Ain’t gonna happen.
The sewing speed is fast and the creative possibilities wide — you need to take some time to get to know the machine, experiment with what works for you and go from there. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and your fashion sewing skills won’t be either.
We think both beginners and the more experienced can get a lot from the Singer 7256 Fashion Mate — but the brand new sewers will need to put in a little work and research to make sure that they get up to speed quickly.
The Singer 7256 is an impressive sewing machine that offers a lot of creative freedom for the aspiring clothes designer.
It’s well priced, well made and a quick worker — just make sure that you’re prepared to do the work to get results. And remember — this is not a heavy duty machine, so don’t treat it like one.
Where to Buy the Singer 7256 Fashion Mate Sewing Machine
While this once was a super popular machine, the Singer 7256 has now been discontinued by Singer so is getting harder and harder to find online.
You can still buy it on Amazon, however — just make sure you get one before they’re all snapped up!
