There are a lot of affordable entry-level machines out there these days, and while many of them aren’t too bad, a lot of them are more or less the same.

The Singer 2259 Tradition Easy To Use Sewing Machine tries to break out of this mould by putting together accessibility with pitch-perfect design; what else from a Singer?

This machine knows a classic look is classic for a reason and doesn’t try to overdo itself with design gadgets.

It’s a light-weight machine designed with a simple white colour and smooth curves. Still, there’s something about that Singer ‘S’ emblazoned on the side that just feels like decadence.

Singer: The Company

Does Singer need an introduction?

With a legacy so long that its very name has become almost synonymous with sewing itself, the Singer Company is more than a household brand.

Established in 1851, Singer roots date back to almost two centuries. The company was born and raised in New York and is now currently stationed in La Vergne, Tennessee.

Buying a Singer means you’re buying solid knowledge. The company has kept up with the technological times without letting go of its history.

This means that it knows exactly what parts of a machine need improving, and what parts are fine just the way they are.

They offer support of all kinds: from tutorials to instruction manuals, both on paper and on their YouTube channel including specialized products and software support.

In other words: if you’re looking for the safest bet at a good price, Singer is the brand for you.

The Warranty

The Singer 2259 Tradition comes with a limited 25-year warranty.

Different elements of the machine come under different sections of the agreement (for example, the machine head is insured for 25 years whereas the motor is good for only five), so that’s definitely something to keep in mind.

Features

Stitch Selection

The Singer 2259 comes with 19 built-in stitches, selectable through an easy-to-use rotary dial.

Users can choose between six essential stitches, from simple zigzags to more sophisticated patterns, four stretch stitches, eight decorative stitches, and one fully automatic four-step buttonhole stitch.

Adjustable Stitch Length/Width

Above the stitch selection, there’s an additional, smaller selection dial that allows you to decide on the length and width of your stitch or button stitch.

This, of course, expands the machine’s creative potential, making it a handy tool for a variety of crafty projects.

Automatic Bobbin Winding

It may seem like a minor extra in comparison to some other available gadgets, but this automatic bobbin winding system actually goes a long way in making sewing on the 2259 Singer Tradition a streamlined experience.

Being able to fix the end of a bobbin within a few seconds on the machine instead of manually labouring over the spool means you can spend more time actually finishing your project.

Heavy Duty Metal Frame

Although the Singer 2259 is hiding a heavy-duty metal frame under its prim exterior it’s still a surprisingly light machine.

The plus sides are straightforward: the metal frame translates to a supportive portable machine that can endure the test of time.

Extra High Presser Foot Lifter

Want to try your hand at denim, at quilting, at pleating that thick velvet cloth you’ve had lying around into a curtain?

The extra high presser foot lifter makes it easy to tackle thicker fabrics, giving you the space to twist them to and fro without the pulling and fumbling of a regular foot lifter.

What else is so great about the 2259 Singer Tradition? Well:

  • It has four (4) different feed dog systems, so you can get all the help you need when sewing a button, a buttonhole, or a zipper.
  • It allows its users to adjust tension when necessary.
  • Has an automatic pressure-foot control.

The Positives

So Very Understandable

The Singer 2259 Tradition Sewing Machine strikes a good balance between sophistication and accessibility.

Its product design is easy to read, making the important stuff (stitching rotary buttons) self-explanatory while allowing the rest to be discovered by the old fashioned way of asking, ‘ooh-what-does-this-button-do?’

The Singer 2259 can be the best sewing machine for beginners and those who are new to sewing. It’s great for novice sewers who just want to alter a few pairs of pants or try new patterns.

While simplicity seems to be the theme, users will not need to upgrade machines once they get going with their Singer Tradition. This machine still works efficiently when taking on more advanced projects and is able to stitch through heavier material like thick cotton or denim.

An Actually Easy Buttonhole Stitch

Ever got behind a sewing machine that promised an easy, four-step, fully automatic buttonhole stitch and found yourself four hours later scouring the internet trying to find how in heaven’s name you sewed a starfish on your jacket?

So have we. But we’re happy to announce: no such nonsense with the Singer 2259.

When they say they’ll help you make that buttonhole happen, they mean it.

It’s All in the Details

Singer is of course well known for its quality design and attention to detail.

And even in this more affordable end of its production, the company still makes sure to add that little extra.

The receding spool holder, for example, makes it that much easier and safer to transport the machine without fear of bits and bobs breaking off.

Who would have thought of that? Singer, that’s who.

Designed To Help

While it’s par for the course for every machine to come with instructions, the Singer 2259 goes out of its way to make getting started as easy as possible with not just an instruction guide, but a DVD machine intro.

You don’t even have to leave the comfort of your home browser; just put on a kettle, pop in that disc, and find out all you need to know about your new Singer 2259 Tradition.

The instructional DVD guide will not only mentor you on how to use the machine but help you prep your Singer Tradition to get your projects off to a great start.

The simplistic design of the Singer 2259 also makes it a little easier to follow along when tackling your own repairs and fixes.

The Negatives

Do Not Follow Instructions?

Every machine, of course, has its drawbacks. With the 2259 Singer Tradition, the Achilles Heel is also related to their biggest strength: their desire to put everything in the instructions, which, turns out, doesn’t always work out as intended.

We tried out several instructions here at HQ, and it was clear that the bobbin winder step-by-step would only lead us to despair.

At that point your options are: follow your instincts, or Google what doesn’t work. Not what you’d call ideal.

To get uninterrupted use out of your Singer Tradition sewing machine be sure to take the time to thoroughly read through the manual, even a few times if needed, to avoid getting frustrated and confused.

Shaky Bobbins

It seems like the automatic winding system wasn’t designed with Singer’s bobbins in mind, because it’s not the sturdiest construction.

There’s some shaky flying about at times if you’re not paying attention, which, let’s be honest, is the opposite of what we expect when told that something is ‘automatic.’

Too Basic?

While the Singer 2259 Tradition is a great, affordable machine for beginner sewers, it may not be the best fit for those with more intricate projects in mind.

The Tradition keeps bells and whistles at a minimum by offering the most basic stitching patterns. This is great for simple projects, repairs and hemming but might be too simplistic for those who want to tackle large projects.

That being said, advanced users can still use this machine to finish smaller to medium-sized projects speedily and easily, or to use as practice to develop skills for bigger projects.

Here’s a video showing samples of the stitches on the Singer 2259:

What’s Warranted?

While the 25-year limited warranty is a good enough deal—especially with the heavy duty frame—there’s some loopholes in the contract that are worth keeping an eye out for.

Not everything is warranted for the the full 25 years. So if you’re looking for a machine to really work on full-time, keep this in mind.

Overall Verdict

The Singer 2259 Tradition Easy To Use Free Arm 19-Stitch Sewing Machine is a lovely classic with some unexpected extras.

It comes with a lot and it does quite a lot, especially for a machine branded as entry-level. It’s a good, accessible design with most of the kinks worked out.

However, it does have some drawbacks when it comes to instructions lining up with the machine itself, so if you’re a user who heavily relies on step-by-step instructions, perhaps there’s a better one out there for you.

But if you’re a curious beginner, looking for a solid, good quality machine – the 2259 Singer Tradition is waiting for you!
