This sewing machine is especially accommodating for the quilter, as it includes a 9″ x 5″ throat space (great for working with large quilts), an advanced feed mechanism for sewing the thickest of materials, and a knee lifter for lifting the presser foot, allowing you to keep both hands on your work.

That’s not to mention its hand-look quilt stitch and five different blanket stitches for applique.

Heavy Duty

While the seller says that it’s not quite strong enough to sew saddles and the like, you’ll find this machine can tackle thick quilts, multiple layers and tough materials like denim and leather with no problem at all.

God bless that sturdy construction! Just make sure that you use the correct needles…

Janome Memory Craft 6500 Review

Unfortunately, nothing is fault free and this computerized dream machine is no exception.

We did find some minor issues with the Memory Craft 6500P that are worth considering before you buy — although we think that these are more than offset by incredible sewing speeds, helpful quilting features, and time saving short cut keys.

The Positives

High Quality and Durable

You can guarantee you’re receiving a superior product that is worthy of the steep price when you invest in the Janome Memory Craft 6500.

The quality and detail is apparent through the look and feel of the machine. For instance, when working at high speeds, the machine’s heavy weight ensures minimal vibration, clearly demonstrating its durability and strength.

This is not something that will need to be replaced and you can take heart in the long lasting shelf-life.

There’s a reason why so many experienced and advanced sewers turn to Janome — the incredible quality.

Huge Stitch Choice and Needle Positions

The Janome Memory Craft 6500P has an incredible array of stitch choices.

With 135 stitches, from decorative, darning, overcasting, and heirloom stitches (as well as seven one-step automatic buttonholes), you have plenty of stunning designs to choose from. All the designs can be found on a handy flip chart that folds up from the back of the machine.

This feature is especially beneficial for users completing a wide range of sewing projects.

Janome are typically known for precision stitch quality, but this particular model has a total of an impressive 71 needle drop positions (including 15 left to right needle positions).

Decorative stitches will have the extensive detail and quality expected from a product at this price.

Easy Pressure Regulation

With any sewing project, pressure needs to be adapted according to the texture and density of the fabric. The Janome Memory Craft 6500P allows you to control how firmly the foot is pressing on the fabric, using the pressure regulator.

The Visible Pressure Gauge can show the exact position of your ideal setting, allowing you to achieve consistent results every time. This is perfect for professionals wanting clean finishes on products.

Great for Quilters

As well as being ideal for advanced and experienced sewers, the Memory Craft 6500 is also well suited to quilters. Indeed, many hobbyist and professional quilters have chosen this as their primary machine.

Here’s why:

  • 9″ x 5″ throat space
  • 5 blanket stitches for applique
  • Hand-look quilt stitch
  • Advanced feed mechanism for thick materials
  • Knee lifter

Easy to Use

While we think the quality of this product and its price means that it’s best suited to serious sewers and quilters, it’s easy enough for beginners to use too, providing you don’t get too overwhelmed at the options offered here.

Convenient features like the automatic thread cutter and automatic needle threader make life easy and allow you to start sewing quickly.

The threader is ready to go in just 3 easy steps and is a huge time saver.

Another time saving factor is the independent bobbin winding motor, which allows you to wind your bobbin while you continue sewing. When you need to wind another bobbin, you don’t have to stop and unthread the machine.

This is extremely helpful when you are working with multiple deadlines and have absolutely no time to spare!

The Negatives

Not Portable

Although the weight of this product supports high speed stitching and ensures minimal vibration, the machine is definitely too heavy to take out of the studio.

At 36.4 lbs, you could be looking at needing a large wheeled bag to carry it around with you.

This could become problematic for anyone who likes to take their sewing machine out with them to different locations, conventions or workshops. It’s a home studio machine, for sure.

Dim Sewing Light

The sewing light appeared to be rather dim, which would not be helpful for late night working.

Additional lighting may be required, and the dim lighting could be challenging especially for users with less than perfect eyesight.

Instruction Booklet is a Little Complex

janome instruction manual

With a computerized machine like this, you don’t want things to be too complicated.

Although many of the buttons and options are straightforward, intuitive and may seem easy to use, we found the instruction manual very longwinded and detailed: both off-putting and at times confusing.

Plus, you know, it’s 78 pages!

It’s easy to get overwhelmed with such an incredible sewing machine as the Janome Memory Craft 6500P. We suggest you take your time getting to know it and watch a few video tutorials to really find your feet.

Overall Verdict

If you are an experienced sewer looking for a solid and durable machine to see you through your infinite sewing projects, then the Janome Memory Craft 6500P is truly a model choice.

You’re guaranteed a high-quality product that will prove to be a fantastic long term investment.

Although this sewing machine isn’t portable, it would be perfect for a studio and has all the essential features needed for the confident and professional sewer. There is no shying away from the steep price but you can guarantee you will get your money’s worth from this impressive sewing machine.

This machine, however, is not ideal for a beginner. Although many of the functions would prove to support an inexperienced sewer, it is definitely a product aimed at confident and skilled sewers, both in price and required-knowledge.
