Janome: The Brand

Yosaku Ose started The Pine Sewing Machine Factory in 1921 which, in 1954, was renamed Janome.

The company started in Japan and now has divisions all over the world including the United States, Europe, Mexico, and Australia.

Janome designs products that will allow their customers to “make the most out of their creativity.”

They do this by following their mission of making sure all their products are reliable, easy to use, and made out of the best materials possible.

Warranty

The Janome JW8100 100-Stitch Computerized Sewing Machine comes with a 25-year limited warranty.

The warranty protects users from errors including “materials or workmanship, with the exception of electrical/electronic equipment, which is warranted for a period of two years from the date of original purchase.”

The first year you have the machine will allow you to receive replacements for any parts that are defective and any labor free of charge.

After the first year of owning that machine, any defective parts can be replaced for free, but you must pay for any labor.

The warranty does not cover anything that happens when you don’t maintain or repair your machine, nor does it cover any damage caused by “normal wear and tear.”

The warranty also only applies to machines that are bought through an authorized Janome retailer.

Features

100 Built-In Stitches

The Janome JW8100 has a whopping 100 built-in stitches.

It will be hard to find a stitch that isn’t included in this machine since the ones provided include 20 basic and fashion stitches, 18 quilting stitches, 27 heirloom-style stitches, 28 stitches used for home décor, and seven buttonhole stitches.

The possibilities of what you can make are endless!

LCD Display

The Janome JW8100 has a backlit LCD display that allows you to see what stitches are available and which one you want to select.

All you have to do is use the navigational buttons to choose a stitch and to adjust the stitch length and width.

The recommended foot is also shown above the number of the stitch.

One-Handed Needle Threader

When sewing, whether you’re a beginner or an advanced sewer, it’s easy to get to the point where you feel like an extra hand would be extremely helpful.

The Janome JW8100 tries to make that a reality by making it so easy to thread this machine.

All you have to do is follow the diagram printed on the exterior to thread it and then use the built-in needle threader. Quick and easy!

Speed Control

While you can sew at 1000 stitches per minute, with the speed control slider, you can sew at any speed you’re comfortable with.

The slider allows you to set the highest and lowest speed of the machine. You can set it to a slower speed for more difficult work and higher speeds for when you are working with a stitch you are more familiar with.

This is a great feature for beginners and a perk for more advanced sewers.

Top-Loading Bobbin

The Janome JW8100 has a top-loading bobbin, meaning that instead of inserting the bobbin at the front of the machine, usually behind the accessory case, the bobbin is inserted in its case near the needle plate.

The bobbin cover is also clear, so you will be able to see if everything is working, if you have enough thread, or if there is a problem you need to address.

Reverse Button

The reverse button will allow you to backstitch to strengthen your seams and make sure nothing unravels.

All you have to do is press the button on the machine above the needle to use this function. This button can also be used to stop a stitch pattern before its completion.

Stop/Start Button

This is a great feature for anyone that has ever experienced lead foot when pushing on the pedal and had their sewing go out of control.

With the start/stop button, you can control the machine without using the foot pedal at all. You can stop and start on a dime.

This will be great when sewing longer seams and for quick jobs.

Extra-Wide Extension Table

One of the great bonuses you receive with the JW8100 is the extra-wide extension table. It allows you to have more workspace when you need it, but can easily be put away when you don’t.

This will work great for sewers who like to work on big projects. No more trying to gather all your fabric onto a tiny, little workspace.

Drop Feed

With this feature, you can lower the feed dogs to drop below the needle plate so when you sew, the feed dogs will not be used.

You would use this for free-motion sewing when you will be constantly turning and maneuvering the fabric in different directions.

But don’t worry beginners; just because the feed dogs are down doesn’t mean the fabric will go wherever it wants. You still have full control of the speed and the direction you want the fabric to go.

Auto Declutch Bobbin Winder

This feature is great for both beginners and advanced sewers. Once the bobbin is full with thread, the bobbin winder will stop completely.

No need to worry about putting too much thread on your bobbin ever again.

The Positives

Computerized

This feature cannot be praised enough. You no longer have to deal with knobs and dials. All you have to do is use the navigational buttons to pick the stitch you want, the stitch length and width, and you’re off and running.

best sewing machine

The machine also recommends what foot you should use based on the stitch you select. If you’re a beginner sewer, this feature is priceless.

The less you have to guess, the more likely you’re not going to get something wrong and possibly ruin your project.

7-Piece Feed Dog System

The feed dog system helps pull the fabric through as you sew. With the seven-piece feed dog system, the Janome JW8100 makes sure whatever fabric you’re working on goes through smoothly no matter what it is.

It works particularly well on tougher fabrics like wool, knit, and fleece, making it easy for beginners to move up from simple fabrics to more heavier ones.

Easy to Thread

Numerous users stated how easy this machine was to thread.

The bobbin can’t be overwound due to the bobbin winder, there is no problem threading the needle with the automatic needle threader, and because this machine has a top-loading bobbin, it is easy to get to the bobbin thread if need be.

You really can’t ask for much more when it comes to setting up a sewing machine.

The Negatives

No Thread Cutter

While not having a thread cutter is a simple thing that can easily be remedied with a pair of scissors, at the price of this machine, it would be a nice feature to be included.

With all the great features on the Janome JW8100, it is easy to miss that it doesn’t have one of the most basic features.

A thread cutter would mean one less step for the user and the lack of it is one of the only places where this machine falls short.

Sewing Through Multiple Layers

This machine is not great when sewing through multiple layers of fabric.

One tester complained that the machine was very loud when they tried to sew through multiple layers, while another reviewer noted that the machine didn’t seem to have the power to work through many layers.

For this reason, the JW8100 may not be the best machine for quilters.

Overall Verdict

Taking all the factors into consideration, we would recommend the Janome JW8100 100-Stitch Computerized Sewing Machine.

Almost all of the functions and accessories do what they’re supposed to do and, really, you can’t ask for much more than that.

Its features make it easy for both beginner and experienced sewers to grow with and work on, and with 100-stitches and seven different feet included, the possibilities of what you can create are endless.
