Janome: The Company

Janome was founded in 1921, first as The Pine Sewing Machine Factory by Yosaku Osem and then renamed Janome Sewing Co. in 1954.

Now, Janome has divisions in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Europe, Australia, and many more countries.

Their stated mission is to provide sewing machines and sergers that are easy to use, reliable, and made of quality materials. They want to ensure the user is able “to make the most of their creativity.”

The Warranty

The Janome C30 Sewing Machine comes with a 25-year limited warranty.

The warranty protects any issues with the “materials or workmanship with the exception of electrical/electronic equipment, which is warranted for a period of two years from the date of original purchase.”

During the first year of owning the machine, you can receive replacements for any parts that are defective, as well as any labor, free of charge.

After the first year, any defective parts can be replaced for free, but you must pay the labor. The warranty does not cover anything that happens due to poor maintenance, nor does it cover any damage caused by “normal wear and tear.”

The warranty also only applies to machines that are bought through an Authorized Janome Retailer.

Features

30 Built-In Stitches

The Janome C30 Sewing Machines includes 30 different built-in stitches, including everything from basic and fashion stitches to quilting and decorative stitches.

For most projects, that’s all you need – and then some! The machine even includes a memory buttonhole feature, which remembers previous settings for buttonhole sizes. No need to recalibrate it every time!

Top-Loading Bobbin

The Janome C30 also comes with a top-loading bobbin. As such, the bobbin compartment is near the needle plate instead of underneath it, as would be the case for a front-loading bobbin.

A top-loading bobbin ensures you can clearly view how much bobbin thread you have left, as well as if there are any problems or jams in need of attention.

Needle Threader

This sewing machine also includes an automatic needle threader – a stress and time-saving feature during any project.

To use it, simply pull the thread through the loops and levers of the machine until you reach the needle. Then, raise the needle to its highest position and turn the power switch off.

Pull down the needle threader knob as far as it will go, then turn the knob to the left. Insert the thread into the hook in the needle’s eye. After that, lead the thread through the guide underneath the hook.

Turn the knob to the right, and then pull the thread loop through the eye of the needle.

LED Display

The C30 also includes a small LED display, which helps you easily pick your settings. To choose a stitch, just press the directional buttons next to the display.

The numbers correspond with the stitches on the included chart. The display is clear and large, making it simple to navigate.

Light

A handy light is also included, placed right above the needle plate. This ensures you have a clear view of your workspace at all times, even when you’re sewing in a dark room or working with dark fabric.

If anything needs fixed or repaired, you can spot it immediately.

The Positives

Super Easy to Set up

Whether you’re a skilled veteran or entirely new to sewing, you’ll have no trouble setting up the Janome C30 Sewing Machine.

The first step is plugging it in, turning it on, and threading it. There is a diagram on the machine, which indicates how to loop the thread through the pulleys and levers.

From there, use the automatic needle threader and thread your bobbin. Next, place the bobbin inside its compartment, near the needle plate, and leave the tail of the thread hanging out.

Turn the control dial; the top thread will catch the bottom thread and bring it up. Et voila – you’ll have your sewing machine ready to go! It won’t take much fumbling and fussing about before you’re off to your first creation.

Very Easy to Use

While it’s super easy to set-up, it won’t require too much skill and knowledge to get going either.

Once the Janome C30 is threaded, you’re ready to use it. Simply pick the stitch you want, via the diagram on the front of the machine and the LCD display.

Once that’s in place, set the tension, and dive in! Press down on the foot pedal and the sewing machine will begin working.

This is great for beginner sewers who aren’t accustomed to sewing machines. It won’t be a frustrating process to get your first project completed.

And if you’re an experienced sewer, this machine’s small learning curve will make it all the easier to switch to.

Extremely Convenient

Since all the necessary items come with the machine, you don’t need to go out and buy extra accessories or parts. This saves sewers both time and money, and beginners won’t have to be fussed about finding the right accessories.

As a plus, everything is on-board the machine as well. No need to hassle with threading the needle; the automatic needle threader is right there.

Don’t turn a dial to pick stitch options; just push the ‘up’ and ‘down’ arrows, and you’re all set. Convenient features like the top-loading bobbin also make this sewing machine a breeze to use and adapt to.

The onboard light ensures that you’ll always be able to see what you’re doing, especially with the help of the LED display. With all these features packed into one machine, we can see that Janome definitely has put an emphasis on convenience.

Remarkably Versatile

While the Janome C30 doesn’t have a vast array of features, it does offer all the necessary elements – and then some. With 30 different stitches, most sewers will be hard-pressed to find this machine lacking.

You can hem a pair of pants, sew on a button, sew up a tote bag, or make a quilt. The only limit is your own creativity.

Beginner sewers will easily be able to up their crafting skills without switching machines, and experienced sewers won’t feel too limited with the features and stitches included with the C30.

The C30 will easily inspire you to tackle a variety of creations and sewing skills without the need to upgrade your sewing machine.

Easily Portable

Fortunately, this machine’s versatility also extends to where you can put it. Thanks to its compact and lightweight construction, it doesn’t steal all the attention and space in a room.

Its dimensions are kept compact so you can easily place this sewing machine where you please! Weighing in at around fifteen pounds, it won’t add much weight to your crafting table, and it won’t be a pain to tuck away until you need it either.

Its size and weight make it easily portable, so if you plan on taking this to class (or anywhere) you won’t have to worry about it being a hassle or slowing you down.

And thanks to its built-in carrying handle, it’ll be all the easier to move this around whenever and wherever you need to.

The Negatives

Check Bobbin sand Needles

For some, the bobbin and needles included with the C30 might be an issue. With this machine, there were some cases where the bobbin thread would jam up or the needle would break.

These issues weren’t consistent but can be a result of using fabric that is too thick (like layers of leather, or stacks of denim). Also, be sure that the bobbin is installed correctly.

While this machine usually works smoothly and is super easy to use, a user error isn’t always unavoidable.

This video shows what the Janome C30 looks like out of the box.

Overall Verdict

After looking over all the positives and negatives, we do recommend the Janome C30 Sewing Machine.

With 30 different stitches, the automatic needle threader, and the top-loading bobbin, this has everything a beginner or mid-skill sewer could possibly need.

Unless you’re tackling large, complicated projects, you shouldn’t find this machine lacking. It’s definitely worth checking out!
