Brother XR9550PRW Computerized Sewing Machine: the Details
Brother has not gone over the top with the design just because this machine is a limited edition model partnered with Project Runway.
Even though the show is known for having a habit of showcasing flamboyant, glamorous, or avant garde fashion, they’ve kept their usual sleek and simple look for the Brother XR9550PRW.
A refined layout keeps clutter to a minimum, as well as clearly displaying the many stitch and thread options.
Upon a first glance, you can tell that this is a sewing machine made to handle lots of work.
It’s smart, clean, and will sit nicely in your workspace.
- Weight: 18.6 pounds
- Dimensions: 20 x 12.5 x 17.8 inches

The Brother sewing machine comes with several feet straight out of the gate, including zigzag, buttonhole, blind stitch, overcasting, zipper, button sewing, spring action quilting, and monogramming feet.
On top of these features, you get a hardcover case to protect the sewing machine when not in use and an oversized wide table for your larger projects.
That is some pretty good bang for your buck.
Brother: The Company
Brother has a long-standing reputation of producing quality products and maintaining a good relationship with their customers.
They have been around for a long time, and we don’t see them disappearing off the map anytime soon – not with their stellar record.
You can feel comfortable buying a Brother product, as you know that you will be getting quality service.
Pretty typical of sewing machine warranties, there are three tiers for the warranty on the XR9550PRW.
From date of purchase, you will have one year on parts, labor, and accessory items; two years on electronic components and printed circuit boards; and a whopping 25 years on chassis casting.
The first two tiers are basically there to cover you in the event that you were given a dud or one of the more delicate parts breaks, and to offer some piece of mind. Pretty standard as warranties come.
The 25 year warranty on the chassis is a nice bonus, and shows that Brother has some serious confidence in the lifespan of their product.
All around, this is a good move on Brother’s part.
This is a great feature, and makes the Brother XR9550PRW Computerized Sewing Machine accessible to all sorts of sewers from beginners to experts.
At the press of a button, the machine will sew the buttonholes in at the perfect size.
One of the nicest features in this sewing machine is the auto-needle threader.
If your eyesight isn’t the best, your hands aren’t the steadiest, or you just hate threading the needle, then this is a feature which will save you time and improve your overall experience sewing.
Why bother with it yourself when the machine can make your life so much easier?
Drop-In Bobbin System
Just another way Brother tries to make your sewing life a little easier.
No need to fuss with the bobbins, your sewing machine includes a drop-in bobbin system so prepping for your sew is easy peasy.
This saves you time and fuss and let’s you tackle your projects sooner than later.
Need to change your bobbin? You can do so in no time without stalling your creativity.
Given the number of feet that come with this machine, and the variety in patterns and stitches, you can do all sorts of sewing projects with ease.
The extended table means that larger projects, like quilts and blankets, can be done without rearranging half of your worktable to make room for the material.
Switching between stitches, threads, and feet is super easy too.
So if you are working on a garment using all sorts of materials, you will not be forced to fuss over changing accessories or adjusting settings.
A simple yet greatly useful LCD screen displays all of your options even in the dead of night, as it’s very well lit and super easy to use.
There will not be any squinting at this screen as you input your stitch selections, no sir-ee, Brother has gone the extra mile, adjusting the screen to be used at all times of day.
You can work into the night and not strain your eyes.
Brother XR9550PRW Computerized Sewing Machine Review
For all that it offers, the Brother XR9550PRW is well priced.
Quality sewing machines can run you hundreds of dollars, some even hitting over a grand, especially if they’re attached to such a high level show as Project Runway.
But Brother doesn’t try to scrounge every penny from you.
Depending on where it’s purchased, you can pick this one up for a super reasonable price that beats out the competition by a landslide.
It’s still a price to budget for, but considering the warranty as well as the brand, it quickly becomes a steal.
Good for Beginners
If you are looking to wet your feet, then this is a good way to do so.
The included features are ready to assist newbies in every way from set-up to threading to stitching.
The fair price also means that you can see if sewing takes your fancy with a relatively low risk – and you can always give it away as a gift if sewing really is not for you!
While of course the sewing machine offers different speed settings to suit your experience level as well as each unique project (as most sewing machines do these days) Brother has gone a little further once again.
They offer adjustable features all over the machine, from how you can use the extending table to how bright the light is to how your favorite stitches are organized.
If you enjoy tweaking all sorts of settings and making sewing machines really feel like ‘you,’ this is definitely a nice extra!
Ease of Use
Whether you’re brand new to the world of sewing, or have been tackling designs for years, the ease that comes with using this machine makes it easy to switch to.
The large, lighted display makes it easy to avoid mistakes, and the wide table makes it easy to switch from small to large projects whenever you’re ready.
Instructions are not the only thing available to guide you, this Brother sewing machine also comes with a DVD guide for extra visuals.
Weighing in at just over ten pounds, the Brother XR9550PRW won’t weigh you down.
The lightweight design of this sewing machine means you won’t be limited to sticking it one place in your home, or crafting room.
Its light enough so you’ll be able to move it if you need more table room, or just feel its time for your sewing machine to have a change of scenery.
Its weight also makes it easy for your limited-edition Brother to become a portable sewing machine. You won’t need an extra hand to help you take it to class – your two hands will be able to handle this.
With so many features tucked inside, it’s great that they’ve made this machine manageable.
Don’t let the lightweight design of the Brother XR9550PRW fool you, this machine will still stand up to heavier materials like denim without a bother.
If you’re thinking about tackling quilting or have designs planned with thicker materials, you won’t need to upgrade your machine to finish your projects.
That being said, if you do notice your Brother struggling with super heavy fabrics, upgrade to a stronger needle instead of a bigger machine.
Lacks More Accessories
Brother sewing machines are known for including a range of accessories, with some models all but giving you the kitchen sink.
Even with all the accessories offered, this one, however, is a little lacking in the ‘extras’ department in comparison to other models.
Considering its price and its aim at beginners, that’s understandable.
However, for experienced sewers, those accessories open doors to more advanced projects, and that’s not possible here.
While it does make it a more appealing buy in some cases, being limited edition is also a downside.
We do not know how long the Brother XR9550PRW will be on the market, or if it will come back into production once its popularity is proven, which is often how limited edition products tend to be marketed.
While this negative certainly does not affect the machine itself, it does encourage impulse buying, which isn’t always smart.
We were pleased with the Brother XR9550PRW computerized sewing machine and how it performed as a low priced but high quality way to break into sewing.
It’s capable of handling delicate stitch-work on quilts just as easily as sewing tougher materials together.
A clean design, generous table, and back-lit LCD screen make this sewing machine a great buy and a smart investment.
If you’re more experienced, however, and need a machine that reflects this, it may be wise to look elsewhere.
