Brother: The Company

Founded in Japan in 1908 by Kanekichi Yasui, Brother is an electronics company that develops far more than just sewing machines and sergers.

They’re known for everything from printers to computers to fax machines. Their stated mission is to “work to anticipate future needs to deliver technological expertise and innovation through superior, technically user-friendly product solutions.”

The Warranty

The Brother Serger ST4031HD Sewing Machine has a limited 25-year warranty. As such, for one year, the entire machine is covered. For five years, the circuit board is covered. For 25 years, the chassis unit is covered.

Within these time frames, Brother will fix or replace parts as needed to ensure your machine works properly again. If your machine needs to be shipped, you are responsible for paying the shipping to Brother for repairs.

The warranty does not cover abuse or misuse of the machine in any way, nor does it cover any of the accessory items.

Features

Blades

This Brother Serger includes an industrial-grade G3, heavy-duty, carbon steel cutting blade. The blade is razor-sharp, so it can easily severe multiple layers of the heaviest or thickest fabrics, as well as whisper-thin, lightweight fabrics.

You’ll receive a clean and straight edge, with no fraying or loose threads.

Stitches

This serger comes with five different stitches to choose from, including the four-thread overlock stitch, the three-thread overlock stitch, the shorter three-thread overlock stitch, the narrow overlock stitch, and the rolled hemming stitch.

This is perfectly sufficient for most projects, especially in hobby crafts.

Metal Thread Stand

The serger also features a metal thread stand. This helps the thread feed up and off of the spools, so you can sew very quickly, without the thread getting tangled or coming loose.

The stand is composed of solid metal, so it won’t need replacing soon – or ever.

Extension Table

The Brother Serger features a large extension table, so you can serge heavy fabrics or multiple layers without feeling cramped. The results will look much cleaner and your edge will be far more polished.

The extension table is also detachable, so you can stash it away between projects. The size of the extension table also supports larger volumes of fabric or heavier fabrics, helping to eliminate the fabric’s weight pulling on the needle and thread.

Threads

This serger also allows you to alternate between three or four threads so that sewing denim or multiple layers of heavy-duty fabric is more efficient.

However, you’re not limited to thick materials; the serger is also precise on lightweight, flimsy fabrics. The mode using four threads is ideal for creating a strong overlock seam, while three threads will accommodate delicate knit projects.

Metal Frame

The Brother Serger has a full metal frame and metal gears on the inside, so the machine will remain stable on any surface.  Even when you’re sewing at high speeds, the weight is sufficient to prevent accidental rocking or movement.

This metal design also lengthens its overall lifespan, so you can be certain it’ll resist the wear of time. And remember, the machine is covered by the Brother warranty.

Trim Trap

This serger also comes with a trim trap, which collects leftover scraps after the knife has cut away the fabric edges. This keeps the extra material out of your way and cleanly gathered for later disposal.

Since the trap is located on the serger’s front and offers a large capacity, you can empty it infrequently and easily.

Bonus! The trim trap can also store the foot pedal when the machine is not being used.

Differential Feed Ratio

The feed ratio is adjustable from 0.7 to 2.0 by turning a knob on the machine body. Adjusting the feed allows for smooth stitching and the ability to create specific types of edging.

Gathers, ruffles, and other decorations are within your grasp when you use this machine.

Stitch Width

The ability to adjust the width of stitching from 5.0mm to 7.0mm (again, easily changeable with a knob on the machine body) allows your edges to lie flat regardless of your fabric weight.

Needles

The Brother Serger ST4031HD uses standard sewing machine needles, which you may already have at home.

That means you don’t need to spend time and money searching for and purchasing specialty needles, which means you can spend more time on your sewing projects.

The Positives

Super Easy to Set Up

This Brother Serger Sewing Machine is very easy to set up. The instruction manual provides clear directions on how to prepare the machine for use, how to clean it when necessary, and how to perform small adjustments along the way.

It may appear complicated at first, but the labels also show you the proper steps to follow. Brother also includes a helpful DVD instructional guide along with the printed instructional manual.

Threading has never been easier since this machine has an automatic needle threader, and it is also color-coded.

Really Easy to Use

Once the machine is threaded, you can choose which of the five stitches to leverage, select the tension needed for your fabric, and decide on a specific foot. All these can be picked using the dials, located on the front and side of the machine.

Then, you can begin sewing! Just raise the presser foot, slide your fabric underneath, ensure that the blade system is in place to cut your edges, and lower the presser foot.

After that, simply press down on the foot pedal and get to work. The serger will sew the edges of the fabric and trim the excess at the same time.

The speed is controlled by a pressure-sensitive foot pedal – the more pressure you apply on the pedal with your foot, the more stitches per minute the machine will perform, and vice versa. This serger’s top speed is 1,300 stitches per minute.

Incredibly Durable

This is one tough and long-lasting machine. Because of its all-metal interior, it will last for decades. The inner workings won’t break after routine use, it won’t demand frequent repairs, and (while certainly not recommended) it can take a few bumps.

It’s a large investment, but definitely a long-term one. Plus, don’t forget that warranty! The warranty protects you against faults from manufacturing that stops your machine from functioning correctly.

Should you come across any issues, you’ll need to contact Brother where they promise to repair or replace your machine. This serger’s heavy-duty frame, backed by a long warranty means you’ll have a lot less to worry about when it comes to this machine’s lifespan.

Very Versatile

This machine offers five different stitches and can handle a massive range of fabrics. Whether you intend to use three threads or four to complete a seam, use an overlock stitch or a rolled hem, or are working with denim, cotton, rayon, or silk, this machine will get through the job quickly and easily.

This is great for sewers looking to hone their skills and sewers who want to try their hand at a variety of projects. It will be hard to feel limited by this machine.

The Negatives

Serging Limitations

While the machine is quite versatile, depending on your needs, there may be a limitation with this Brother Serger.

While you can use three or four threads to serge a seam, you can’t use two. The machine doesn’t allow for that.

It’s clear on the product listing that this machine only serges with three and four threads, but it’s worth noting specifically that it does not have a setting for two thread serging. If you’d prefer more stitching options, it may be wise to keep shopping.

Thread Breaking

If you are looking to serge very fast on this machine, be aware that the thread may break when running at high speeds.

You may want to use a thicker, more durable thread if you plan to work at the top speed of 1,300 stitches per minute. The standard thread is too flimsy.

If you sew at a medium to medium-high speed, you should be fine using the thread you would normally choose.

Overall Verdict

After going over all the positives and negatives, we do recommend the Brother Serger ST4031HD Sewing Machine.

It offers a versatile and durable build, a great number of accessories, and includes many helpful features.

While it does have some limitations, if you stick to three- to four-thread serging, you shouldn’t have an issue. For the price on Amazon, it’s definitely worth giving a shot.
