Brother: The Company
Brother started in 1908 as a sewing machine repair company and has since grown into an international sewing success story. By developing their technology from traditional sewing machines to modern garment printers, Brother not only competes in but also dominates the sewing world.
Not only can this company be found in every continent excluding Antarctica but listed in their charter, Brother makes a conscious effort to support local communities and the environment.
Although Brother is an older company, the effort they put in to update their designs is incomparable, placing this company among the most modern and respected brands in sewing.
The Brother SE400 comes with an impressive 25 year warranty—and thank goodness for that. This guarantee covers not only your machine but also all its accessories, including needles and light bulbs.
Of course, this warranty doesn’t extend to misuse or items that would normally need to be replaced like the needle plate and bobbin case.
The warranty itself divides into three categories: the machine itself is insured for one year after the original purchase, the machine’s printed circuit boards are guaranteed for five years after the original purchase date, and the Brother se400 chassis unit is covered for all 25 years.
The 25 year warranty itself means Brother will decide whether to repair your machine or replace it altogether before supplying you with a fully functioning machine.
The Brother SE400 is the definition of a feature-rich sewing machine.
Here’s a few things you can expect:
- Automatic bobbin winding system
- Quick-set drop in bobbin system (no jams!)
- 7 point feed dogs for precise fabric maneuvering and steady stitching
- Automatic needle threader
- 4″ x 4″ embroidery area — allows for detailed designs and more space for meticulous work

Brother SE400 Sewing and Embroidery Machine Review
Very Easy to Use
The SE400 sewing and embroidery machine is seriously easy enough for the most basic of beginners to get to grips with.
Take the bobbin preparation, for instance.
Placing a bobbin is one of the most tedious parts of sewing, second only to winding a bobbin. Looping thread around a bobbin over and over again, only to spend even more time trying to angle said bobbin into its slot is difficult — not to mention fishing around to correct the thread’s placement.
Luckily, Brother is through with these tedious tasks so they created an automatic bobbin threader that winds the bobbin with thread for you. Once you’re done threading the bobbin, simply place it into the Quick-Set drop-in bobbin system and begin sewing or embroidering—it’s that easy.
Kind on Tired Eyes
Thanks to the automatic needle threader and impressively bright lighting, you won’t be squinting like nobody’s business with the Brother SE400.
Thimbles, magnifying glasses, squinting, and cutting thread at an angle — we all have our own unique techniques for threading needles.
Despite all that effort, we still prick our fingers or waste too much time on the threading instead of the sewing. That’s why Brother SE400 has an automatic needle threader, so you don’t have to worry about aligning the thread perfectly.
Then, once the needle’s threaded, the machine also has a light focused near the needle, so you can focus that much more on your work.
LCD Backlit Touch Screen and Computer Connectivity
An easy to follow guide and multiple tutorials all in a backlit touch pad can be found on the Brother SE400: what more could you want?
Well, thanks to its computer connectivity, you can also import hundreds of designs from iBroadery.com straight to you machine.
Want to experiment with a new font or flower? No problem, the Brother SE400 caters to your curiosity and encourages embroidery experimentation with its touch screen and computer connectivity.
Smooth and Quality Stitching
There is little worse than working on a piece and having everything in order only for your fabric to slip away at the last moment.
We’ve all been there — and to the seam ripper that follows — but the Brother SE400 refuses to let that continue.
Now with 7-point feed dogs, this sewing machine steadies your fabric while helping you guide it under the needle to create steadier line work.
We found that sewing is simply easier with this machine. There’s no jamming, no tangling — everything is simple, smooth and just works. Aaahhh…
Here’s a look at the SE400 in action while it’s embroidering:
Relatively Small Hoop Size
The 4” x 4” embroidery hoop absolutely offers enough space for small, complex designs, but for those of you feeling more experimental with larger designs, we suggest purchasing an additional hoop.
The 4x 4” is the perfect size for decorations on children’s clothing and smaller statements on other pieces of fabric.
That being said, larger pieces or even embroidering longer names may prove a tad tedious with this size hoop. There is a quick fix of buying more embroidery hoops, but this is something to consider when purchasing.
Additional Purchases Needed
While we said earlier that this machine is so intuitive than even a complete novice could get their head around it, you shouldn’t think that you’ll be ready to go as soon as you’ve got the SE400 out of the box.
It does come with a few accessories but you will need to buy things like thread, bobbins, heat bond and the like. And if you want to start with embroidery, remember that you need to acquire software and potentially pay for designs too.
These are all worthy and relatively small investments, especially if you’re committed to sewing and embroidery, but you may want to consider a more ‘all-in-one’ machine if you want to play straight away.
The Brother SE400 combination computerized sewing and embroidery machine has double-knotted our heartstrings in its favor.
True, this machine comes with only one size of hoop, but it’s compatible with other sizes if you choose to experiment more with embroidery. And you may need to load up on a few other accessories before you throw yourself in.
But all-in-all, the Brother SE400 is an excellent, high quality sewing machine that abolishes any concerns of so-so quality and lets you focus on what’s really important: so sew.
