Versatile, reliable and a great stitcher, it’s no wonder that the Brother Project Runway PC420PRW is such a popular sewing machine!
It’s not a completely perfect machine — we spotted a small issue with the automatic thread cutter — and it doesn’t come cheap, but it’s undoubtedly a very high quality machine that offers good value for money when taking into account its many features and quality.
Looking for a machine that can do it all?
The Brother Project Runway PC420PRW has a reputation for being one of the best machines for versatile sewers.
We *love* it.
With a number of accessories and built-in treats, the Brother PC420PRW allows sewers of all stripes and experience the opportunity to create whatever their hearts desire, with whatever fabric they desire.
With 294 built-in stitches, computer power, and its range of ability, the Brother PC420PRW is one of Brother’s classier sewing machines and more expensive for it.
It’s not a perfect machine but the opportunities that the Brother PC420PRW presents its sewers seems like more than enough to make up for it.
We’ll let you decide that, of course: let’s find out more…

Brother’s longstanding reputation of creating quality sewing machines, backed by their standard 25 year limited warranty, stands as testament to their dedication to their sewers.
They even run a sewing blog, ‘Stitching Sewcial,’ in order to create a community of sewers and to provide personal stories, tips, and DIY project designs to sewers who are considering their products.
The aforementioned 25 year warranty for the Brother PC420PRW ensures that parts, labor, and accessories for the machine can be replaced up to one year after purchase of the machine.

Adding to the machine’s ease of use is the fact that it comes equipped with an automatic needle threader.

Brother PC420PRW Review
The Brother PC420PRW is an undeniably impressive machine, but is it really everything it’s hyped up to be?
Let’s take a look.
High Quality Stitching
The most important thing to check before forking out a few hundred dollars for a sewing machine, is how well can it actually sew?
Very well, in fact. We continue to be impressed by the Brother PC420PRW’s sewing skills — it reliably produces even and straight stitching at exactly the configuration you choose in the LCD settings menu.
It’s part of the Project Runway line of sewing machines and this isn’t only a great marketing ploy: clothes makers love the reliable stitching quality, space for creative expression and general ease of use that’s offered here.
Good for Heavy Duty Sewing
The work that the Brother PC420PRW can do is limited only by your imagination. This baby is VERSATILE.
This machine is a workhorse and can handle just about every fabric, both alone and in layers.
Its large variety of stitches and collection of feet allow you to create any manner of complex project. If you spend multiple hours a day and several days a week at your sewing machine, then the Brother PC420PRW will not only suit your needs: it will surpass them.
Easy to Use and Good for Beginners
The Brother PC420PRW’s adjustable speed means you can take your complex projects as quickly or slowly as you like.
If you’re just starting out and want to get a feel for a project, keep things at a steady pace. If you’re more experienced, feel free to increase speed as you like. The Brother PC420PRW will keep up with you, whatever speed you want to work at.
Handy features like the automatic needle threader and cutter, and super easy bobbin winding system all add up to make operating this machine pretty much a breeze.
A Full Body Sewing Experience
The built-in knee lift is a gift when working long-term on a project or on a large canvas like a quilt.
The knee lift ensures that you don’t have to take your hands off of your project; it lowers your presser foot for you.
It may take a bit of getting used to if you haven’t worked with a knee lift before, but it’s well worth it to have one on your machine.
Super Bright Work Space
This feature is often underrated in sewing machines, but we absolutely love the bright workspace of the Brother Project Runway PC420PRW.
The machine’s LED light ensures that you don’t strain your eyes while you work. By providing a well-lit space, the machine ensures that the hours you spend working on your latest project are not ones spent in the dark.
Extra Trimming May Be Necessary
The automatic thread trimmer is a really nice tool to have in your sewing machine, but there’s occasionally some extra work that you’ll need to do when working with the Brother PC420PRW.
While the thread trimmer seems reasonably reliable, we occasionally find that we have to trim an extra inch or so off of the thread it leaves behind.
Be careful, too – some users have commented that overuse can wear out the thread trimmer.
Brother Bobbins Only
While the F.A.S.T bobbin system works wonders, you’re going to need Brother bobbins, specifically, when working with this machine.
Other similar bobbins have been reported to snag when working with the machine or to not work at all. Boo.
It’s Not Cheap
The Brother PC420PRW is priced for its quality – not a bad thing, exactly, but it means that the machine is not cheap.
It’s best to view this machine as an investment: if you want to improve your sewing, use the machine for all manner of creative projects and general sewing, then you’re likely to get a huge amount of mileage out of it.
With all of its abilities and accessories, the Brother PC420PRW is worth the cost, but it’s not a machine you’ll want to buy if you’re not committed to the pursuit of your projects.
Although there are a couple of issues to consider before buying the Brother Project Runway PC420PRW, we really can’t recommend it enough.
It’s incredibly versatile, easy to use and reliably produces excellent stitching.
This machine has definitely established itself as a workhorse among other sewing machines of this price tag. It’s great for both ambitious beginners and the more experienced creatives among us. General sewing? No problem. More specialist creative projects? You’ll wonder what you did without it.
The vast opportunities its machinery presents along with its array of accessories allows for the adventurous sewer to pursue any number of ambitious projects. While it’s not a perfect machine, it’ll definitely serve you well as your start marking off projects from your dream list.
