Bernette B37 Sewing Machine Review

We independently research our recommended products. We may receive commissions on purchases made from our links.

Computerized sewing machines offer greater convenience and high-tech abilities, but, as a trade-off, they’re generally complicated to use. What if you need a clever machine for a straightforward job? Are there simple models that don’t sacrifice efficiency?

The Bernette B37 Sewing Machine may be that perfect fit.

It’s available to buy on both Sewing Machines Plus and Amazon.

As a computerized model (unlike the Bernette B35), it’s easy to set-up, offers 50 stitches in total, runs quietly, and provides a whole host of accessories. With that said, no product is without flaw. To help you make an informed decision, we’re evaluating all the good and the bad.

You may find this sewing machine rather pricey, and it struggles on thick fabrics.

But is that enough to sway our good opinion?

Let’s take a closer look at the Bernette B37 Sewing Machine. Then you can decide for yourself!

Bernette B37 Sewing Machine: The Details

The Look

The Bernette B37 Sewing Machine offers a basic aesthetic, but its looks can be deceiving. The exterior is almost entirely white, save for the back side, which is black. The needle plate is made of stainless steel, while the inner workings are all metal.

To give it that modern touch, it also includes an LCD screen with buttons scattered around it, providing you access to its more advanced features. In terms of size, the B37 is comparable to a small microwave or toaster oven.

Bernina: The Company

Bernette is a company under the umbrella of the Bernina Textile Group. Bernina is headquartered in Switzerland and, according to their website, they’re known for focusing on both “quality and innovation.” Though founded in 1893, the company has made high-quality sewing and embroidery machines ever since. They rolled out their first computerized machines in 1998 and now offer high-tech sewing machines, quilting machines, embroiderers, and overlock machines with all kinds of features.

The Warranty

The Bernette B37 Sewing Machine comes with a 10-year warranty. This allows the buyer to return their machine for a replacement or a refund, should any parts be defective due to faulty parts or labor. The warranty does not include any damage from normal wear and tear or due to issues caused by improper use of the machine.

Features

Fifty Stitches

The Bernette B37 Sewing Machine comes with 50 different stitches in total. These include 17 utility and stretch stitches, two darning stitches, 19 decorative stitches, five buttonholes, and seven quilting stitches. Since they’re built directly into the machine, you can begin a range of projects right away. Whether you’re quilting, working with a stretchy fabric, or just fixing a hole in a shirt, this selection will have you covered.

The built-in stretch stitches do allow you to sew on stretchy knit or jersey fabrics, which some machines cannot handle.

LCD Display

Since this is a computerized sewing machine, it features an LCD screen. From here, you can pick your stitches, adjust their length and width, and cycle through other options. You need only use the buttons and arrows next to the display screen to scroll, halting once you’ve found the perfect fit.

The information displayed on the LCD includes the stitch pattern number to show you which of the programmed stitches the machine will use, the stitch width, the stitch length, and the presser foot recommendation.

Drop-In Bobbin

This Bernette Sewing Machine has a drop-in bobbin. As such, instead of finding the bobbin in a compartment underneath the needle plate, hidden away, it’s right in prime view. This makes it easy to access for rethreading and simple to check for any problems – such as jamming.

Speed Control

You can also change the speed of the sewing machine, depending on how fast or slow you prefer. There is a slide lever that simply glides back and forth, allowing you to select the correct pace. Experienced enough to go fast? Crank it up. New and uncertain? Slow it down and take your time. This also makes delicate projects effortless to work on and easy jobs a quick affair.

Needle Threader

As a convenient feature, this Bernette B37 Sewing Machine provides a needle threader. With it, you can save time and avoid the frustration of manually threading.

To use the tool, first ensure that the presser foot is lifted. Then, pull the needle threader down and turn it away from you, so the hook comes out through the needle’s eye. Draw the thread around the guide and under the hook. Turn the needle thread away from you and watch as it cleanly threads itself. It’s that simple!

Presser Foot Adjustment

This sewing machine allows you to adjust the pressure of the presser foot, which can help with sewing thin or lightweight fabrics.

Decorative Stitch Settings

The quilting stitches and decorative stitches that are built into the Bernette B37 sewing machine’s programming can help you easily dress up your designs and sewing projects. The beautiful patterns come in many different styles and don’t require any additional work, the machine is already programmed with the stitch design.

With a wide variety from floral shapes to geometric squares, this machine makes it easy to beautify your fabrics.

Start/Stop Control

Unlike most sewing machines, the Bernette B37 doesn’t have to be used with the foot pedal. The machine has a start/stop button that tells the machine to run just like the foot pedal would.

To adjust the speed, there is a simple slider called the “Slide Speed Control” that will make the machine stitch faster or slower.

Of course, this machine will sew just fine off the included foot pedal! But if it’s easier or more convenient for you, it can also run with a start/stop button and a speed adjuster.

Presser Foot Height

The Bernette B37 has two height levels for the presser foot. Trying to sew together a taller stack of fabric? Make the presser foot higher above the platform. Fewer pieces of fabric? Simply lower it back towards the platform.

Accessories

This sewing machine comes with five different variations of the presser foot, which is really useful. The button foot is exactly what it sounds like, it helps the machine sew buttons onto fabric perfectly. The zipper foot easily attaches zippers. The zig zag foot is great for decorative work. The buttonhole foot allows you to stitch a perfectly sized buttonhole for every button you attach (with the button foot we mentioned earlier!) and the embroidery foot is made of transparent plastic so you can see your project.

There are numerous other types of presser feet available for all kinds of projects, but the ones we listed here are the only ones included with the sewing machine.

The Positives

Easy to Set Up

Since the Bernette B37 Sewing Machine is designed as simple and effective, it’s easy to set-up.

First, thread the bobbin: Put a roll of thread onto the thread spool and place the bobbin on the other spool. Then, take a length of the thread and wrap it around the bobbin. Once that’s done, pull the hand wheel out and start the machine until the bobbin is full.

Afterward, slide the bobbin into its compartment.

Next, pull the top thread through the levers of the machine and use the automatic needle threader. When that’s done, you’re all set to begin sewing!

Easy to Use

Day-to-day use is even simpler!

Once it’s threaded, your next step is to choose your stitch type, its length, and its width. Then, snap in the presser foot (if you’re using a specialty one), place your fabric underneath the needle, lower the presser foot, press the foot pedal, and you’re ready to go!

Versatile

While 50 stitches may not seem vast, especially when compared to other models, it’s enough to handle most jobs. You have access to basic stitches, decorative stitches, various buttonholes, and stretch and utility stitches. Whether you’re hemming a pair of pants, making a garment, or sewing a quilt, you’ll be hard-pressed to find an essential stitch this machine doesn’t cover.

Convenient

With so many on-board features, the Bernette B37 is highly convenient. Through the LCD display, dozens of stitches are right at your fingertips, and there’s also the automatic needle threader, speed control, and start/stop button directly on the machine. For medium-sized projects and fast jobs, it’s designed to make sewing much easier.

As a plus, the motor is designed to operate quietly, so there’s little danger of waking up the household with early morning projects.

The Negatives

Expensive

At almost $450 on Amazon, it’s more expensive than other sewing machines with the same, if not more, features. While its computerized design naturally increases the price, you may find 50 stitches rather limited for the overall cost. However, you are paying for durability and convenience, and if the machine fits your needs, it could pay itself off long-term.

Not for Thicker Fabrics

Sadly, this machine isn’t designed to handle wool, thick denim, velvet, and other sturdier materials. The motor will struggle, as it was meant to be quiet and effective – not excessively powerful. You should also watch how many layers of fabric you’re putting through the machine. Four layers of a medium-thick fabric can add up and may break the needle or cause jams.

However, if you only intend to use light or medium fabrics, rarely stack materials, and prefer a quiet machine, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Overall Verdict

After going over all the positives and negatives, we do recommend the Bernette B37 Sewing Machine. It offers useful features, is easy to set up, and can handle a range of projects.

So long as you can afford the price tag and won’t be tackling heavy materials, it should serve you well.
